Terms:
Minie ball- The new and improved musket ball, the back end
expands with the explosion of the black powder and fits into the
rifling grooves and makes the bullet spin to be more accurate.
Amputations- when the limb can not be saved due to bad
injuries, then it has to be removed, a skilled doctor could remove
an entire limb in about 10 minutes.
Gangrene - a
disease caused by infections, it was very deadly and killed
many, a death of the soft cells.
Confederate- Wore the grey, fought for states rights, under the
command of General Robert E. Lee, surrendered at Appomattox
on April 9th, 1865.
Union- Wore the blue, won the war.
Telegraph- America’s first source of mass
communication, needed only seconds to send messages, Union
used it well but South was not able to use it as much.
Sharecropper- Farms the landowner’s land for a portion of the
crops, a house, and some land to live on.
Tenant Farmer- pays the landowner money for rent to have a
house, some land, and be able to farm on the land.
Bromine- with the discovery of bromine, nearly ¾ of
amputees survive surgery, and gangrene becomes rare by the
wars end.
People:
Abraham Lincoln- 16th president of the United States, killed by
John Wilkes Booth, president during the war, wanted the 13th
Amendment and gave the Emancipation Proclamation.
Gen. Robert E. Lee- Leader of the Confederate army, fought
with Gen. Sherman in the Mexican War and was well known
from that, surrendered to Sherman, but did not remember him.
Gen. Burnside- His last name and sideburns led to the invention
of the word, sideburns, he captured Burnside’s Bridge at
Antietam, he had a defeat at Fredericksburg by Lee’s smaller
Confederate army.
Gen. William ShermanSherman’s march to the sea, he wiped out Atlanta, South
Carolina, and eventually captured the Confederate Army at
Appomattox, had the tactic of total war and his troops made
Sherman’s Bowties with the Confederate railroads.
Pres. Johnson- Did not feel the need to help the blacks get rights
and fought against black rights but the Republican party
overruled him, he ended up being impeached because he was
assigning commanders against the gov. and doing other things
that the Senate did not agree with so they voted to impeach him.
Events and Things to Know:
Emancipation Proclamation- signed by Lincoln, it said that all
slaves would be forever and always be free in any state.
