REAL NUMBER CLASSIFICATIONS
Real Numbers (ℝ)—Any number that can be represented on a number line. These
include every number we discuss in this class.
Natural Numbers (ℕ)—The counting numbers starting at one.
Ex: 1, 2, 3, 4 …
Whole Numbers ()—The natural numbers and zero.
Ex: 0, 1, 2, ,3 …
Integers (ℤ)—The whole numbers and their opposites.
Ex: … − 3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3 …
Rational Numbers (ℚ)—Any number that can be expressed as a fraction, or any
decimal that terminates or repeats.
Ex: 0, , , , 1.5, 2.75, 4.0, 1.3, 0,6, 2.14, 6.27
Irrational Numbers ()—Any number that cannot be expressed as a fraction, or
any decimal that does not terminate or repeat. These
include square roots of whole numbers that are not
perfect squares and numbers that are represented by
symbols.
