Setting up the Gradebook in Moodle
Below you will find instructions on how to set up your Moodle courses for grading. Note: We have had
issues on courses that were imported from last semester or year – EVERY assignment and quiz is set to
be extra credit! (Yes, your students would be happy, so if you don’t want to check, they won’t mind!)
So make sure you go into Grades, Categories and Items, and choose the Full View to see what your
settings are set on.
For most classes, this is what your setting should be:
 The class aggregation is set to Weighted Mean of Grades. (See example below). This is the first
aggregation shown.
 Each category under that should be set to Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. This means that
something worth 20 points is twice as important as something worth 10 points. If you really
want everything just averaged – you give a 3 point quiz, a 10 point quiz, a 25 point quiz, but you
just want to give the average of the percentage they got on each quiz, then you would use
Weighted Mean of Grades. See me if you want more explanation on this. But most want to just
add up the points, so you would choose Simple Weighted Mean of Grades.
 Give each category a Weight, depending on what percentage it makes of the total grade (i.e.
Quizzes are worth 15% of the grade in the example below).
 Make sure nothing is marked as extra credit unless you want it to be. AND extra credit DOES
work here if you set it to Simple Weighted Mean of Grades.
 Make sure each category total is left at 100, no matter how many points you have in that
category.
 Every category should be clicked under the “Aggregate only non-empty grades” column. This
means that if a student doesn’t have a grade, that will not be considered a 0. So enter a 0 if
they get no points.
 Don’t click anything in the Aggregate including subcategories.
Keep checking the students’ grades every now and then to make sure everything is okay. You can view
an individual student’s grade by choosing View, User Report, and selecting the student. Let me know if
