A decimal fraction is a fraction described as a decimal number. A place value
chart is used to demonstrate them.

A number that has two decimal places has two numbers after the decimal point,
eg 0.34 has two decimal places.
It can be read as:
• zero point three four
• 34 hundredths
• three tenths and four hundredths

Using decimal fractions
Decimal fractions are used in many areas of mathematics,
especially measurement.
1 dollar = 100 cents
so
$1.48 = 1 dollar and 48 cents
1 metre = 100 centimetres
so
1.25 metres = 1 metre and 25 centimetres
1 metre = 1000 millimetres
so
1.25 metres = 1 metre and 250 millimetres
1 kilogram = 1000 grams
so
2.5 kilograms = 2 kilograms and 500 grams
1 litre = 1000 millilitres
so
4.368 litres = 4 litres and 368 millilitres
1 hour = 60 minutes
so
1.5 hours = 1 hour and 30 minutes
