Volunteer Role Outline
Children’s Out Patient and Blood Clinic Volunteer
Role
Volunteer in Ocean Outpatient Department including Blood
Clinic, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, St. Thomas’
Hospital
Summary of the
role
To offer help and advice to families visiting our busy underwater
themed Outpatient Department at Evelina London Children’s
Hospital. There are 20 consultation rooms and a central waiting
area offering multi-specialty Paediatric services. We have a
busy blood clinic service where patients are referred to by local
General Practitioners and by our own medical staff.
The department has recently undergone significant re-design
and modernisation including the introduction of electronic self
check-in and flat screens providing information in the waiting
room. We are, therefore, looking for enthusiastic volunteers to
support our clinical and administrative outpatient and blood
clinic teams.
Volunteers will act as the initial welcome for patients and
visitors into Evelina London Children’s Hospital and more
specifically, the Outpatient department and Blood Clinic.
They will also:
 assist patients to use the new electronic, touch-screen self
check-in system operating for out patient appointments and
the blood clinic
 liaise with the staff from the blood clinic to be able to update
patients and their carers on approximate wait times and to
explain to them there maybe delays especially during busy
periods
 to inform staff if patients become anxious or stressed
especially those waiting for a blood test
 show patients or visitors to the waiting area or any other
facilities in this area
 help patients or visitors to find their way around the
department and wider hospital
 explain how the new call-forward system works (e.g. system
of patient names being displayed on screens in the waiting
area for a specific appointment)
 assist in guiding patients or visitors to the right room (e.g.
consultation room, weights and measures rooms, and
preoperative assessment rooms)
 to be on hand to assist or guide any patients leaving the
department/hospital
 have opportunities to act as a staff representative at Evelina
meetings and contribute towards patient experience
improvement projects
