COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is the continuation of the Patient Care Technician Program
at Virginia Mason Medical Center, combining technical instruction with
workplace basic training. It offers the student 56 hours of on-the-job
experience and supervised training providing direct patient care,
applying the clinical nursing skills acquired in the previous class.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Through the use of the supervised on-the-job practical application, the
student will demonstrate knowledge and competency in basic clinical
nursing skills as applied to the care of inpatient adults, in
accordance with minimum entry-level industry standards in the
application of:
1. Legal and ethical standards
2. Communication skills
3. Safety protocols
4. Asepsis and infection control
5. Knowledge of abnormal signs and symptoms
6. Observation, reporting and recording skills
7. Basic restorative skills
8. Patient care skills
9. Basic technical skills
10.Specimen collection

 CPR/BLS certification; EKG training; mock code; preparation for
clinical experience

Monday through Thursday
June 20-23, 2005
 Day 1: Orientation (2 hours) (does not count as clinical time)
 Day 2: shadow PCT on the unit (8 hours)
 Day 3: assume care of one patient and practice skills with
preceptor PCT under the supervision of clinical instructor (8
hours)
 Day 4: assume care of two patients and practice skills with
preceptor PCT under the supervision of clinical instructor (8
hours)
June 27-30, 2005
 Days 1-4 assume care of at least two patients and practice
skills with preceptor PCT under the supervision of clinical
instructor (32 hours)
 Total clinical hours: 56 hours
Group B: Tuesday through Friday
July 5-8, 2005
 Day 1: Orientation (2 hours) (does not count as clinical time)
