Hazardous and regulated waste
Regulated waste is commercial or industrial waste of a waste type listed in Schedule 7 of the
Environmental Protection Regulation 2008. Regulated wastes are hazardous wastes that have been
deemed to be extremely harmful to the community and the environment and therefore require a higher
level of regulation.
Reduce and reuse
Commercial operators are recommended to look at industries and businesses that may use your waste
product, to reduce the cost of regulated and hazardous waste disposal fees.
Tips: Businesses who wish to reduce their waste disposal and costs.
View Planet Ark's Business Recycling website to register your business and waste products online to
promote to other businesses that may be in need of your waste product: www.businessrecycling.com.au
Prepare a waste management plan for the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste to benefit from
savings by sustainable waste reduction and disposal. The Department of Environment and Heritage
Protection’s (EHP’s) ecoBiz program can assist with this process or contact the Queensland
government’s customer referral centre via 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
Disposal of limited regulated and domestic hazardous waste
Development approval conditions with the Department of Environment and Resource Management
(DERM) place limitations on the type and amount of waste materials that can be accepted at council’s
waste management facilities.
Please see below for the types of hazardous waste that are accepted at council’s waste management
facilities. Refer to council’s website for a full list of ‘Accepted Waste’ at the four major waste
management facilities.
Council’s waste management facilities can only accept limited amounts of “limited regulated waste”
which is a sub category of the regulated waste classification. Limited regulated waste means any of the
following types of regulated waste types:
 Animal effluent and residues, including abattoir effluent and poultry and fish processing waste;
 Asbestos;
 Food processing waste;
 Quarantine waste that has been rendered non-infectious;
 Sewage sludge or residue;
 Treated clinical waste;
 Tyres.
Commercial operators with limited regulated waste for disposal are requested to contact council prior to
disposing of large quantities to ensure the waste can be accepted.
Residents can dispose of domestic quantities of domestic hazardous waste at council's waste
management facilities.
If the waste cannot be accepted at council’s waste management facilities, services are offered by
commercial recyclers who can provide onsite or offsite solutions. Refer to the Yellow pages or Planet
Ark’s Business Recycling website: http://businessrecycling.com.au/
