Project description
“Going Green” is an i-movie that talks about saving the Earth’s trees and planting new
trees. The goal is to make students aware of how to protect our environment through
the 3 R’s-Reducing waste, Reusing resources, and Recycling used products and
containers. Curious George and “The Three R’s” song by Jack Johnson are used as way
to hook students into the movie while fellow students narrate certain facts about our
Earth. The end result is to collect enough money through recycling soda cans to
purchase and plant a new tree for the school yard.
NY Standards addressed
Teachers – ISTE I, II, V, VI
Students – NETS – 4
 Character Education traits mainly addressed: Citizenship, Respect, and
Responsibility
 Other content areas possibly addressed: Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies,
Science, Music, Art, Physical Education and Technology
Procedure
 During the last week in March arrange for an assembly. At this time the movie
will be seen and the goals of the project will be further discussed. If needed, a
flyer or handout could be given so the goals are clearly stated for the community
to understand. As well, a link could be given on an e-board for everyone to view.
 Beginning the first full week in April recycling cans will be placed in the cafeteria
for those to put the soda cans in from home.
 At the end of the week, the cans will be brought the store to be recycled. On
Monday mornings, the total amount of money collected from recycling will be
announced during the morning announcements.
 At the end of the month, the total amount will be announced and the school will
choose between two differing trees to plant in the school yard.
 Once the tree has been purchased and the hole is dug for the tree to stand in,
the students will go outside and shovel dirt into the hole at a scheduled time so
they can have pride and ownership of their accomplishments.
Instructional/environmental modifications
Grade level project, school wide assembly, student council activity
Resources needed
A DVD or computer to play the movie, a projection screen, handout (if desired),
garbage pails, garbage bags (to transport the soda cans), a nursery to buy the tree
Assessment plan/Reflection
 Students could create a “Chicken Soup for the Recycling Soul” for their class.
Ideas or chapters could include what did they learn, how else could they help
protect their Earth, how important is recycling, how did they feel knowing they
did something good for their Earth.
 Students could create a slogan or a bumper sticker based on what they learned
 Students could create an acrostic poem using the words “Earth” or “Recycle”
 Students could compare and contrast different types of trees that exist in
different parts of the world or within the United States of America
 Students could research tree leaves, their habitats and their growth
 Students could write a song about the three R’s
 Students could draw a picture or a comic strip about their experience recycling
 Students could create a game to play that addresses one or all of the 3 R’s
 Students could research various trees on-line and calculate how many cans they
would need to recycle to purchase those trees
