In addition to on-going work supporting the SNS in Cornwall, the key areas on which the secondary team will be focussing for 2007/08 are as follows: Widening the current project in developing teaching & learning approaches in Post-16 mathematics, to include the production of a multi-media DVD resource which shows lessons and has input from teachers, together with resources that can be downloaded. This project is grant supported by the NCETM (LN) Running an innovative programme, based around action research, for teachers new to – or aspiring to – the role of subject leader in mathematics. This programme is accredited at Masters level by ‘Marjons’ and is also grant supported by the NCETM (LN) Extending last year’s pilot of the ‘Maths Leaders Award’ to a further six secondary schools (LN) Supporting ‘Family Learning’ in delivering inter-generational numeracy sessions to year 7 pupils and their families in two secondary schools (LN) Working jointly with Torbay and Devon LAs in planning and delivering sessions to support the development of HLTAs in mathematics (LN) Supporting three secondary schools in developing primary/secondary transition modules addressing thinking skills in mathematics (LN) Continuing to closely support the success of Study Plus in Cornwall, including through the development of school networks (NT) Identify and work closely with a group of leading maths teachers in developing a range of resources to complement and support APP in secondary schools (NT) Working with two secondary schools in trialling aspects of the revised framework PoS (NT) Supporting schools in implementing Functional Skills in mathematics (NT) Support special schools in developing and implementing schemes of work for KS3 and KS4 (LN) For further details, please identify the named person (initials in brackets) for each area and contact: LN : Lee Northern (Mathematics Adviser) lnorthern@cornwall.gov.uk NT: Nicola Trubridge (SNS Mathematics Consultant) ntrubridge@cornwall.gov.uk Primary Focus Areas The renewed primary framework for mathematics is a key focus for the Cornwall primary maths team this year, in which we will be supporting subject leaders, class teachers, supply teachers and leadership teams in primary schools. In addition to this work, we will support: Continuing to expand teachers subject knowledge through targeted courses e.g. subtraction Developing effective intervention - a course for managers in schools Promoting the use of effective and appropriate resources (numicon, beadstrings etc) Disseminating materials to support teaching with the renewed framework (e.g. mixed age planning materials and contextual approaches for teaching units) Moderating end of KS1 assessments Promoting teacher assessment across all year groups Leading initial teacher training for mathematics The analysis of end of year tests to inform target setting Continue to develop and disseminate renewed framework planning and ‘track-back’ materials with special schools We are also hoping to set up a working group of teachers to examine approaches to engaging more able girls in mathematics with a view to improving the performance of girls in maths at KS2 (LN).
