Human Disease/Disorder Projects: Cardiovascular System
We have just finished studying the cardiovascular system- the system your body uses to
transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, and food to the body so that each cell has the
ingredients it needs to run cellular respiration.
Our third disease project of the year will be on diseases associated with the
cardiovascular system. For this assignment, you will responsible for designing and
constructing a model of the disease in question. You must also write a short write-up
describing how the model represents the disease, which will be handed into to me.
Remember, you must include a reference list. Lastly, you will be responsible for
presenting the model to the class.
For this assignment, you will work with ONE partner or by yourself. You will need to
answer some common questions and follow some basic guidelines about the disease you
have been assigned:
Common Questions:

What is the name of your disease?
2.
What are the symptoms of the disease and the age at which it typically
begins?
3.
What is the biological cause (eg. What organelles are involved? What cellular
processes are not working? Are the enzymes that are not working correctly?)
4.
How does the above biological cause relate back to the unit we are currently
studying?
5.
How is the disease/disorder acquired?
6.
What are the treatments/cures for the disease/disorder?
7.
What is one thing that you learned about the disease you studied that you
think is interesting?

Questions for Cardiovascular Systems Models:
What does the model show?
Can you explain the model in terms of the disease?
What is the true result of the disease? For example, does the disease limit
the amount of oxygen? Does the disease prevent blood flow?
Show the difference between the normal and the diseased parts of the body.
Basic Guidelines:
 You MUST have questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 printed out and posted in front of your
model.
 Must be in your own words (no copying)
 You must have at least three sources.
 Sources must be properly cited within the document and within a reference
section at the end, in MLA format.

 The model must be big enough for the class to see if you are presenting in front
of the room.
 Essential parts should be labeled.
 Must hand in a reference section with the answers to the questions.
 Your write up must be:
o 12 pt font
o Times New Roman
o 1” margins
o Must be one page in length.
