*A verb and its subject must agree in number
Use singular verb with a singular subject
Use plural verb with a plural subject
*Singular verbs in the present tense usually end in –s
or –es
*Plural verbs in the present tense DO NOT usually end in
–s
(is) – present, use with he, she, it (singular nouns)
(was) – past, use with he, she, it (singular nouns)
(are) – present, use with we, you, they and all plural
nouns
(were) – past, uses with we, you, they and all plural
nouns
EXAMPLES
1.) Corey (collect, collects) baseball cards.
2.) Students at our school (help, helps) with
playground maintenance.
3.) There (was, were) not any people sitting in the last
row of the balcony.
4.) The gerbil and a white rat (is, are) attracting a lot
of attention at the pet show.
