Use Your Microwave Properly
With temperatures rising during summer months, it is more important than ever to
use kitchen appliances wisely. Energy experts with Jackson Electric Membership
Corporation (EMC) offer customers the following tips to maximize the use of
microwaves and keep kitchens cool this summer.

Defrost food in the refrigerator instead of the microwave; it is more economical.

Use the microwave to cook small to medium quantities of food. To cook larger
portions of meat, use a conventional oven.

Since some microwaves do not heat foods evenly, wrap foods in plastic to hold in
steam. Be careful not to cover foods too tightly, because steam could cause burns
when opening the packet. Instead, leave a corner open for steam to escape.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure food is cooked correctly. Keep in
mind that microwave cookbooks give cooking times based on those appliances
used by the author. Adjust cooking times to suit your microwave rating.

Never turn on a microwave when it is empty because it could cause damage.

Keep the edges of a microwave door and its hinges clean by washing the inside of
the microwave. Boil a cup of water in the microwave and then wipe the sides
with a damp cloth.
Jackson EMC is a consumer-owned cooperative providing electricity and related
services to 194,000 customers in metro Atlanta and northeast Georgia.
