Flood Myth Comparison and Contrast Essay
The purpose of this single paragraph compare and contrast analysis is to evaluate the
similarities and differences between two different flood myths and what this myth claims to
say about its people.
Directions:
 Select two different myths from the packet of stories provided.
o One of the myths must be the Biblical, Babylonian, Egyptian, or Incan flood
myth
o The second myth is one of your choice. It may be one from the list above or
any other myth from the packet.
 Identify the archetypes used.
 Analyze the similarities and differences in the two myths.
 Intelligently discuss what these similarities have to say about the myths culture or
people.
Requirements:
 Paper needs to be a standard compare and contrast where you develop and support an
argument.
 Paper length needs to be a full page in length (approximately 200-250 words).
 Double space.
 Establish a clear purpose for writing (topic sentence identifying your point).
Helpful Hints:
 Topic sentence which introduces the two myths and the purpose of your comparison.
o Thesis – what the essay will be proving
 Transitions (words that smoothly introduces the main topic of the paragraph and
smoothly moves from one idea to the next).
 Do not provide too much plot summary. Your goal is to analyze the myths not
summarize the similarities and differences.
 Should include textual evidence and explanations of how the evidence supports the
main idea of the paragraph
 Conclusion should link to the introduction
o End with final statement about topic
o Conclusion should not introduce new information/topics
