Medication to be used in conjunction with Implant
Procedures
Pre-op
Antibiotics
Amoxicillin is the antibiotic of choice for patients undergoing implant surgery
Usual dosage for patients who are not allergic to penicillin:
3g 1 hour before surgery
If your patient is allergic to penicillin, erythromycin (250mg tabs) is to be
administered:
1g 1 hour before surgery
Analgesics
Ibuprofen is the drug of choice in patients the have no contraindications. 400600mg can be give just before surgery
Paracetamol is suitable where ibuprofen contraindicated. 500mg is given.
Anesthesia
Articaine 4% (with adrenaline 1:100 000) is first choice
Lignocaine 2% (with adrenaline 1:80 000) is an acceptable alternative
Citanest (prilocaine with octapressin) can also be used
Antiseptic
Corsodyl mouthwash 10ml for 1 minute before treatment
Post-op
Antibiotics
Post op antibiotics are indicated if grafting has been carried out or if surgery
is complicated.
Amoxicillin:
500mg tds for 7 days
Erythromycin:
500mg qds for 7 days
Analgesics
Ibuprofen is first choice:
400-600mg qds for 3-4 days
OR
Co-codamol 30/500 is an alternative to paracetamol for moderate to severe
pain (must not be prescribed if paracetamol is already being taken):
1-2 tablets qds for 3-4 days
Antiseptic
Corsodyl mouthwash 10ml bd for 1 week (must leave an interval of at least
30 minutes between using mouthwash and toothpaste)
Anesthesia
Bupivicaine hydrochloride (0.5%) can be used for prolonged nerve block
anesthesia following surgery. It is not available in dental cartridges, only
ampoules, hence disposable needles and syringes have to be used.
Other medications
Oral Sedation
Diazepam can be used for management of anxiety. Recommended dosage
varies with patient body weight, age, other medical conditions and
medications. Usual dosage for a 70kg individual is 15mg 30 minutes prior to
surgery
Steroids
Dexamethasone can be used for additional anti-inflammatory treatment if
large grafting procedures are carried out or if surgery complex. Usual
dosage is 2mg bd for 3 days
Nasal decongestant
Xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.1% 10ml drops (Otrivine, Otradrops)
2-3 drops into each nostril 2-3 times daily for 1 week.
