Great War Service: George Hussey Allen enlisted at Ilkeston, although the
precise date is unknown. He was killed in action on 22 October 1916, aged 20,
and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, in the Somme region of north
eastern France, Pier and Face 6C.
Family: The son of William Henry and Emily Susan Allen, he was born in Derby
in 1896. The 1911 census gives the family address as 22 Olive Avenue, Long
Eaton.

Second Lieutenant 1772, ‘D’ Company, 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire and
Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters)
Great War Service: Colin Claude Baker enlisted on an unknown date but the
Medal Index Card gives the date of his arrival in France as 20 April 1915. He died
of wounds on 12 May 1917, aged 28, and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery,
near Boulogne in northern France, grave reference XVII.A.17.
Family: The son of Joseph Henry and Annie Baker, he was born in Nottingham in
1889 and was the younger brother of Edgar (see below) and cousin of Harry
Leslie Baker (see overleaf). At the time of the brothers' deaths, they were living
at ‘Hill Crest’, Derby Road, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Edgar Cecil Baker enlisted at Nottingham, date unknown,
but the Medal Index Card gives the date of entry as 12 February 1915. He died
of wounds on 19 June 1918, aged 32, and is buried in St. Giles’ churchyard,
Sandiacre.

1885 and was the older brother of Colin (see above) and cousin of Harry Leslie

killed in action on 8 November 1918, aged 26, and is buried in Dourlers
Communal Cemetery Extension, near the town of Maubeuge in north eastern
France, grave reference II.C.1. He was awarded the Military Cross in March
1918.
Family: The son of Harry Edgar and Lily/Leila Marie, he was born in Nottingham
in 1891. He was the cousin of Colin Claude Baker and Edgar Cecil Baker (see
previous entries). At the time of his death, the family address was ‘Lyndhurst’,
Derby Road, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Thomas Barsby attested at Nottingham on 4 December
1895. He died at sea as a direct result of enemy action on 31 May 1916, aged
39, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel 22.
Family: Believed to be the son of Thomas and Naomi Barsby, he was born in
1876, possibly in Sandiacre. The 1891 census gives the family address as
Church Street, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Neville Barson enlisted at Ilkeston, date unknown. He died
of wounds on 23 March 1918, aged 26, and is buried in Dernancourt Communal
Cemetery Extension, in the Somme region of north eastern France, grave
reference III.J.45.
Family: The son of William and Sarah Ann Barson, he was born in Stapleford in
1892. At the time of his death, he was living with his wife Maggie in Shaftesbury
Avenue, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: John Brown enlisted at Ilkeston on 18 February 1916. He
died of malaria on 18 July 1918, aged 29, and is buried in Jerusalem War

Family: The son of William and Mary Ann Brown, he was born in Stapleford

Great War Service: George Frederick Cooper enlisted at Ilkeston in February
1915. He was killed in action on 16 February 1917, aged 22, and is buried in

Great War Service: Albert Leslie Crofts enlisted at Ilkeston on 13 June 1917
and was called up on 6 November 1917. He was shot and wounded on 27 May
1918, died of wounds as a prisoner of war on 22 July 1918, aged 19, and was
buried by the Germans in a cemetery at Charleville, on the French/Belgian
border, on 22 July 1918. He is now commemorated at Terlincthun British
Cemetery, Wimille, near Boulogne in northern France, grave reference VIII.D.9.
Family: The son of Albert and Martha Crofts, he was born in Sandiacre in 1899.

Great War Service: John William Dale’s enlistment details are unknown. He was
killed on 8 August 1915, aged 33, during enemy action at sea and is
commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent, Panel 13.
Family: The son of John and Sarah Dale, he was born in Great Hampton,
Worcester in 1881. The 1911 census gives his address as Sandiacre Post Office
where he is shown as Postmaster.

Great War Service: Robert Dixon enlisted at Derby, date unknown. He died of
wounds on 14 November 1914, aged 23, and is buried in Messines Ridge British
Cemetery, near the town of Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium, grave reference V.C.6.
Family: The son of Robert Young Dixon and Josephine, he was born in Derby in
1891. The 1911 census shows him living with his grandmother at 311 Osmaston
Road, Derby.

Great War Service: Robert Ivan Doncaster enlisted in March 1915 into the

Rifleman Y/1613. 1st Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps
Great War Service: Details of enlistment for Charles William Ellis are unknown
but he received the 15 Star so was serving at that time. He died of wounds on 30
March 1918, aged 28, and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen in
northern France, grave reference P.VII.6B.
Family: His birth parents are unknown although he was born in Sandiacre in
1889. The 1911 census shows him living with his adoptive parents at 7 King
Edward Street, Sandiacre.
M Elston
4622 RGA, 669 Royal Sussex Regiment
Great War Service: Matthew Edward Elston enlisted at Nottingham on 29 March
1914 and was discharged on 30 October 1914. He subsequently worked at No 6
Shell Filling Factory at Chilwell, Nottinghamshire and was presumed killed as a
result of the explosion on 1 July 1918, aged 40. His remains are buried in a
mass grave at St. Mary’s churchyard, Attenborough.
Family: The son of James and Lucy Elston, he was born in South Kirby about
1878. The 1911 census shows him living with his wife Mary and daughter at 4
Kent Road, Stapleford.

Great War Service: Charles Goodwin attested at Ilkeston on 9 September 1916
with service from 17 February 1917. He died in training on 26 March 1917 from
meningitis at Cannock Chase Military Hospital, aged 18, and is buried in St.
Andew's churchyard, Langar from where his mother originated.
Family: The son of Charles and Mary Goodwin and stepson of William Howarth,
he was born in Cropwell Butler in 1899. The 1911 census shows him living with his
mother and stepfather at 22 Victoria Road, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Percy Hewitt Peadon’s enlistment is recorded in the

1914.. He was reported missing, presumed killed in action, on 23 October 1914,
aged 32, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium,
Panel 41 and 43.
Family: The son of Alfred and Annie Perkins, he was born in Aston on Trent in
1882. He was married to Lillie and the 1911 census gives the family address as
3 Mill Lane, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Zachariah Pritchard, enlistment unknown, was reported
missing in action on 30 July 1915, aged 24, and was confirmed killed in action in
1916. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium, Panel

stepson of Stephen Williams, he was born in Holywell, Flintshire in 1890. At the

however, the qualifying date on his Medal Index Card is 30 January 1915. He
was killed in action on 29 July 1918, aged 27, and is commemorated on the
Soissons Memorial, in the town of Soissons approximately 60 miles north-east of
Paris.
Family: The son of George and Eliza Riley and stepson of Sarah Minnie Riley, he
was born in Sandiacre in 1891. The 1911 census gives the family address as
Barbadoes, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Arthur Oswald Sellears' enlistment is unknown but the
Medal Index Card gives the date of his arrival in France as 7 August 1915. He
died on 11 December 1918, aged 21, and is buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer)
Souvenir Cemetery, on the outskirts of the town of St. Omer in northern France,
grave reference V.E.76.
Family: The son of William and Elizabeth Sellears, he was born in Chellaston,
Derbyshire in 1897. At the time of his death, the family lived at 37 Block Council
Houses, Sandiacre.

reported missing, presumed killed in action, on 1 July 1916, aged 31, and is

in 1885. At the time of his death, his wife Rosa and daughter lived at 1 Bradley

he was born in Stapleford in 1893 or 1894. He was the elder brother of Harry

Great War Service: Harry Simpson enlisted at Nottingham, date unknown, but
the Medal Index Card gives the date of his arrival in France as 19 May 1915. He
was killed in action on 25 September 1915, aged 19, and is commemorated on
the Loos Memorial, near the town of Lens in northern France, Panel 101 and 102.
Family: The son of James and Selina Simpson of 10 Victoria Road, Sandiacre,
he was born, probably in Stapleford, but possibly in Derby, in 1895 or 1896. He
was the younger brother of Frederick (see previous entry).

Great War Service: Arthur Smith enlisted at Ilkeston, date unknown, but the
Medal Index Card gives the date of his arrival in France as 11 September 1915.
He was killed in action on 3 May 1917, aged 27, and is commemorated on the
Arras Memorial, near the town of Arras in northern France, Bay 7.
Family: The son of Isaac and Elizabeth Smith, he was born in Sandiacre or
possibly Long Eaton, in 1894 and was the younger brother of Walter (see
overleaf). At the time of the brothers' deaths, the family address was 17 Bradley
Street, Sandiacre.

Private 48644, 1st Battalion Prince Of Wales’s (North Staffordshire) Regiment
Great War Service: George Smith enlisted at Ilkeston on 11 December 1915.
He died of pneumonia at the hospital for prisoners of war at Cassel in
Niederzwehren, central Germany, on 12 December 1918, aged 32, and is buried
in Niederzwehren Cemetery, grave reference V.A.13.
Family: The son of Harry and Annie Smith, he was born in Nottingham in 1886.
His wife Florence and son lived at 47 Station Road, Sandiacre.

reservist at the outbreak of war in August 1914. He died of wounds in a German
field hospital at Lomme near Lille on 4 November 1914, aged 30, and is buried in

reference Lomme-La-Miterie German Cemetery Mem. 2.
Family: The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stagg, he was born in the Sneinton
area of Nottingham in 1883. His wife Agnes and children lived at 20 Church
Street, Sandiacre.
W Taylor
Second Lieutenant, Royal Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport)
Great War Service: Walter Taylor enlisted as a Private in the Army Service
Corps on 19 January 1916 and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in March
1918, at which point his rank was Acting Corporal. He served in Mesopotamia,
modern-day Iraq, and died of enteric fever at the 3rd British General Hospital,
Basra on 17 July 1918, aged 28. He is buried in Basra War Cemetery in Iraq,
grave reference I.L.21.
Family: The son of William and Jane Harris Taylor, he was born in Beeston on
10 June 1890. At the time of his death, the family were living at 'Hill Croft',
Derby Road, Sandiacre.
F Teate
Private 3588, 18th Hussars; also Acting Sergeant 33502, 6th Battalion Alexandra
Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment (transferred 30 November 1916)
Great War Service: Frank Teate was recalled to the colours as a reservist at
the outbreak of war in August 1914. The Medal Index Card gives the date of his
arrival in France as 26 August 1914. He died of wounds on 30 January 1917,
aged 37, and is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, in the Somme region of
north eastern France, grave reference V.A.12.
Family: The son of Joseph and Emma Teate, he was born in Great Staughton,
then in Huntingdonshire, now in Cambridgeshire, in 1879. By the time of the
1911 census he was living in Dale Road, Stanton-By-Dale, with his wife Lillian
Jane and their four children.

Great War Service: Fred Carver Thompson enlisted at Nottingham, although
the precise date is unknown. He was killed in action on 12 September 1916,
aged 22, and is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, in the Somme
region of north eastern France, grave reference I.D.25.
Family: The son of George and Annie Thompson, he was born in Sandiacre in
1894. At the time of his death, the family address was 11 Springfield Avenue,
Sandiacre.

Great War Service: John Turner enlisted in the Territorial Force on 1 December
1914. He performed home service only and died as the result of a chill caught
whilst guarding bridges in Nottingham on 31 March 1915, aged about 48. He is
buried in St. Giles' churchyard, Sandiacre.
Family: He was born in Allington, near Grantham, Lincolnshire about 1867. His
mother’s name was Mary and his father’s name is unknown. In 1914, his wife
Ann and five children appear to be living in Victoria Street, Sandiacre.

Great War Service: Frank Warner enlisted at Ilkeston, although the precise

Great War Service: William George York enlisted at Long Eaton on 9 December
1915. He was discharged unfit (TB) on 7 July 1917 and died from pulmonary TB
on 19 May 1918, aged 31, in Sandiacre.
Family: The son of George and Mary Ann York, he was born in Stapleford on 30
July 1887. At the time of his death, he was living with his wife Hilda at 12 (now
23) Butt Street, Sandiacre.
