FREP mission: To be a world leader in resource stewardship monitoring and
effectiveness evaluations; providing the science-based information needed for
decision-making and continuous improvement of British Columbia's forest and range
practices, policies and legislation.
Resource sustainability through science and stewardship
What is this award?
The Chief Forester and ADM Operations Award for Excellence in Resource Stewardship
Monitoring is an annual award for the forest district demonstrating the highest level of
contribution and excellence in resource stewardship monitoring (RSM) associated with
the Forest and Range Evaluation Program (FREP).
Who is eligible?
All districts involved in RSM are eligible to be nominated for the award. This is a Team
Award given to the district as a whole, with the staff that performed the majority of the
work given special recognition.
How do nominations work?
Nominations may be submitted from Forest and Range Evaluation Program Working
Group (FREWG) members, Resource Value Team Leaders, Regional Executive
Directors and District Management Teams. We strongly encourage district managers to
nominate their district RSM team for the award.
Please submit your nominations for the 2008 field season award in the format provided
for easier evaluation by the voting panel. Fill in as much information as possible. Email
completed nomination forms to Alanya.C.Smith@gov.bc.ca by April 20, 2009
Who is on the voting panel?
The voting panel consists of the three regional FREP contacts, two members of FREWG,
the FREP Quality Assurance and Data Management Specialist, at least two Resource
Value Team Leads and the FREP Resource Stewardship Monitoring Specialist. The
Director of the Forest Practices Branch will also be invited to participate on the voting
panel.
The panel will evaluate the nominations and make a recommendation to the Chief
Forester and ADM Operations, who in turn make their final determination of the winning
district.

What are the evaluation criteria?
The evaluation criteria are a combination of qualitative and quantitative components.
The overall goal is to recognize the district that made the most significant contribution to
resource stewardship monitoring and FREP as a whole. See the nomination form for a
description of each of the nomination criterion.
What does the award consist of?
The winning district will be awarded the trophy at an appropriate recognition event held
in their district. The accomplishments of the winning district will be published in the
Forest Service Newsletter and on the FREP website. Honourable mention will be given
to all those nominated, along with a letter of recognition from the Chief Forester and
ADM Operations.
What is the timeline for nominations and awarding?
Nominations are due by April 20. The award event will be arranged with the winning
district for a convenient time during the following field season (June – September).
Continuous improvement
The award process will evolve and grow each year as suggestions are made to improve it.
At the end of the process, FREP will ask for feedback from award recipients, nominees,
the District Manager, the Chief Forester, and the ADM Operations to find out what
worked well and what could be improved for the following year.
