KBBE.2011.1.3-02: Development of field tests for rapid screening of pathologies
as well as simple laboratories tests in animals
Project description
The focus of the project is to develop field tests based on new or current
technologies for use in a rapid first line early multiple screening of
pathologies / syndromes in livestock (including aquaculture species),
wildlife and companion animals. We have developed a diagnostic kit for
the detection of Bovine mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary gland in
cows which is a major challenge for the dairy industry worldwide as it
lowers milk yield, reduces milk quality, and increases overall production
costs.
We have developed immunoassays to detect mastitis; a method for

measurement of somatic cell count; an integrated identification system for
three of the key causative agents, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia
coli and Streptococcus agalactiae.
The Molecular Diagnostics Research Group (MDRG) at NUI Galway has
20 years experience and an international track record of achievement in
the development and application of molecular diagnostics tests for
microbial species identification.
We are interested in applying our diagnostic technology for other
diseases, prevailing in developed and developing countries.
