Ghent, Belgium
Belgium is the geographical heart of Europe. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and also the
capital city of Europe. European institutions such as the European Commission, the European
parliament are based here.
Belgium is a very diverse county with 3 cultural communities. Flanders is the Dutch speaking
community with lies in the north of the country. Wallonia is the French speaking community
that is situated in the south of the country. A third part is German speaking and is situated in
the south east of Belgium at the German boarder.
But what you really need to know about Belgium is its reputation for its very fine cuisine.
Another delicacy Belgium is famous for are its fine chocolates and pralines. During your stay
you will find out that the reputation is credible!
Belgium is also a paradise for daytrips. Whether you enjoy a day at a historic cultural city or
rather prefer hiking through the beautiful scenery of the nature in the Ardennes (Wallonia).
There is always something to do or to see in this small country.
Ghent is a city in the Dutch speaking region of Belgium,
Flanders.
Ghent is situated 50km from Brussels. This beautiful
historic city will capture your heart. But Ghent has much
more to offer than history. With a population of
approximately 40500 students Ghent is a lively city with
a big variety of cultural events, performances, gigs, …
and countless bars and restaurants.
Ghent has several concerthouses (The opera,
Handelbeurs, Vooruit, capitol), museums (MIAT, SMAK,
Huis Van Alijn) and theatres (Minard,
Nieuwpoorttheater, publiekstheater).
But Ghent has also a broad range of student facilities.
The Arteveldehogeschool is associated with the
University of Ghent and so all of our students have
access to University Facilities. Such as a Gym, a pool
and many other sport facilities, several students
restaurants, and a lot of cultural activities.
The Arteveldehogeschool is one of the biggest colleges of higher education in Flanders. The
campus of teacher training of the Arteveldehogeschool is situated at the Kattenberg, in the
city centre of Ghent.
The teacher training programme for secondary school education at the Arteveldehogeschool is
a 3 year training.
The department of teacher training offers a broad scale of subjects in witch the students can
choose from. In fact there are there are 244 combinations with the following options:
geography, physical recreation, biology, economics, English, French, physics, history, religious
education, computer science, Dutch, technology, mathematics, bio-aesthetics-hairdressing,
commerce-office skills, physical education, musical education, arts, catering-hospitability,
chemistry, German.
The Arteveldehogeschool also offers a lot social and cultural activities for students.
We have a special welfare facilities with SOVO ARTE. There is a office at each campus. They
will help you with any problems you may have.
