Describe the activity or process
THIS PROCEDURE DESCRIBES THE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY DISSECTORS IN THE ROOM 101A DISSECTING LAB.
* CAUTION - CORRECT PPE MUST BE WORN BEFORE STARTING ANY TASKS WITHIN ROOM 101A. THIS INCLUDES
ENCLOSED FOOTWEAR, LABCOAT OR PROTECTIVE GOWN & GLOVES. A P1/ P2 RATED DISPOSABLE MASK OR HALF .
FACE RESPIRATOR MUST BE WORN WHEN CUTTING BONE TO AVOID INHALATION OF BONE DUST
* NOTE - NO INEXPERIENCED PERSONS MAY ATTEMPT ANY DISSECTING UNLESS BEING INSTRUCTED & SUPERVISED
BY THE LAB MANAGER OR A QUALIFIED STAFF MEMBER.
* ANY PERSON WORKING IN THE ROOM 101A AREA WILL HAVE COMPLETED AN OHS INDUCTION SPECIFICALLY FOR
THIS AREA. THIS IS CONDUCTED BY THE LAB MANAGER. ANY INCIDENTS THAT OCCUR MUST BE IMMEDIATELY
REPORTED TO THE LAB MANAGER.
* AT START OF SESSION SELECT REQUIRED SPECIMEN FROM TANK & REMOVE ( SEE SWP REMOVING EMBALMED
CADAVERIC SPECIMENS FROM STORAGE TANK) & TAKE INTO ROOM 101A ON TROLLEY.
* EACH DISSECTOR IS TO BRING IN A TOWEL TO COVER THEIR SPECIMENS- THESE ARE TO BE KEPT WET AT ALL
TIMES WITH WATER ONLY.
*TO REDUCE CHEMICAL FUMES EACH PROSECTION SHOULD BE RINSED IN THE DISSECTING ROOM SINK
* PLACE SPECIMEN ON BENCH AT ONE OF THE DESIGNATED WORKSTATIONS. DISSECTING IS TO BE CARRIED OUT
ONLY IN THESE AREAS AS THEY ARE SERVICED BY AN AIR EXTRACTION SYSTEM TO REMOVE FUMES.
* EACH WORKSTATION WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH A DISSECTING KIT WHICH INCLUDES SCALPELS, BLADES, FORCEPS
& ANY OTHER TOOLS REQUIRED - SEE STAFF IF A KIT IS NOT AVAILABLE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE
DISSECTORS TO WALK AROUND THE LAB WITH SHARPS THEY ARE TO BE CARRIED IN A TRAY.
* UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS A SCALPEL TO LEAVE A WORKSTATION WITH THE BLADE STILL ATTACHED.
* IF A DISSECTOR NEEDS TO UTILIZE ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT (SURGICAL DRILLS/ BURRS ETC) OR EQUIPMENT
THEY ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THEY NEED TO SEE THE LAB MANAGER OR QUALIFIED STAFF FOR INSTRUCTION IN
ITS
USE & SUPERVISION WHILST USING
* ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT USED MUST HAVE A CURRENT UNSW ELECTRICAL TESTED TAG ATTACHED.
* IF CUTTING BONE REFER TO SWP “ CUTTING BONE “
* IF SUTURING A SPECIMEN REFER TO SWP “ SUTURING EMBALMED CADVERIC MATERIAL “
* EACH WORKSTATION IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED CHAIR THAT CAN BE ADJUSTED TO SUIT
INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS & EITHER A SURGICAL LAMP OR OVERHEAD SURGICAL LIGHT THAT MUST BE USED
WHILST DISSECTING
* DISSECTORS ARE TO TAKE SHORT PERIODICAL BREAKS ( E.G. 5 MINUTES EVERY HOUR) TO REDUCE THE RISK
OF REPETITIVE STRAIN TYPE INJURIES TO THE BACK,NECK,WRISTS,FINGERS & EYES.STAFF CAN PERFORM
ALTERNATE TASKS DURING THIS TIME.ANY ONGOING PAIN ASSOCIATED WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED AREAS
SHOULD BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY TO THE LAB MANAGER.
* SCALPELS - SEE SWP FOR FITTING/REMOVING SCALPEL BLADES.
* IF A DISSECTOR LEAVES THEIR WORKSTATION FOR A BREAK THEY ARE TO COVER THEIR SPECIMEN WITH THE WET
TOWEL- NO EXCEPTIONS. IF FINISHED FOR THE DAY PLEASE REFER TO SWP “ WORKSTATION CLEANUP FOR
DISSECTORS “
List all resources required including plant, chemicals,
personal protective clothing and equipment, etc
PPE - LABCOAT/GOWN, GLOVES, ENCLOSED FOOTWEAR, P1/P2 DISPOSABLE MASK OR HALF FACE RESPIRATOR
SAFETY GLASSES OR GOGGLES
DISSECTING KIT - CONSISTS OF SCALPEL HANDLES, BLADES, FORCEPS ( TOOTHED/ STRAIGHT) SUTURING NEEDLE
NEEDLE HOLDERS & RETRACTORS
DISSECTING LAMP/ OVERHEAD SURGICAL LAMP
DISSECTING CHAIR ( ERGONOMICALLY SUITABLE)
SURGICAL DRILL / BURRS
WORKSTATION WITH AIR EXTRACTION SYSTEM

List emergency shutdown instructions
IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY OR EVACUATION ALARM SOUNDING DO THE FOLLOWING;
AT THE FIRST ALARM TONE COVER YOUR SPECIMEN WITH TOWEL,REMOVE SCALPEL BLADE,PPE GEAR & WASH
HANDS READY TO EVACUATE IF REQUIRED. FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS GIVEN OVER THE P.A. SYSTEM.
List clean up and waste disposal requirements
ALL DISSECTED WASTE ( BIOLOGICAL ) IS TO BE BAGGED & LABELLED WITH A DONOR NUMBER FOR RETURN TO
MORTUARY & CORRECT BODY TRAY.
ALL SHARPS DISPOSED OF IN CORRECT SHARPS CONTAINERS
ALL GLOVES & OTHER WASTE TO BE CORRECTLY BAGGED ( CLINICAL WASTE BAGS ) & PLACED IN YELLOW CLINICAL
WASTE BINS.
