Fellowship in Neuro-HIV and Neuro
Infectious Diseases
Program Overview:
This fellowship has been in existence since 1999 and combines training in clinical care, as well
as in basic and clinical research in the fields of Neuro-HIV and Neuro Infectious Diseases. Our
aim is to help young neurologists become independent clinician scientists and future leaders of
this emerging sub-specialty.
This 2-3 years fellowship is open to board eligible or certified neurologists in the US, or to
foreign-trained neurologists with a valid ECFMG certificate. Fellows will participate to the
outpatient clinic of the HIV/Neurology Center under the direct supervision of Dr Koralnik.
They will learn how to care for HIV-infected patients presenting with neurological disorders, and
for patients with a variety of Neuro Infectious Diseases. They will have the opportunity to
participate to didactic teaching conferences at BIDMC and Harvard Medical School.
Fellows will also participate to clinical and basic science research projects and will be integrated
in the dynamic research group of the Koralnik Laboratory. They will have the opportunity to
learn how to prepare IRB protocols, and how to design and conduct clinical research studies.
They will be able to participate to a variety of ongoing basic research studies in the laboratory,
and will be trained in cutting edge techniques of neurovirology, molecular biology, cellular
immunology and histology relevant to their projects. Fellows will also be trained in manuscript
preparation and grant writing. They will be mentored in submitting a grant application to
National or International funding agencies.
