IN SUSTAINABILITY AWARD WINNERS
Action on Climate Change, Air Quality and Energy Efficiency

The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg
The University of Manitoba reduced greenhouse-gas emissions to six per cent below 1990
levels through an institution-wide effort to manage and plan for future emission impacts.
The university continues to show strong leadership and innovation in greenhouse-gas
emission tracking, management and reporting.

Honourable Mention: Public Works East Yard Complex, Winnipeg
Mistecture Architecture + Interiors Inc. were involved with the design of the Public Works
East Yard Complex. The design takes up four city blocks in the area of the former
Elmwood/Nairn Avenue landfill site and incorporates many sustainable features such as a
comprehensive land drainage system, energy-efficient and water-efficient fixtures and
integrates design aspects to reduce environmental health impacts. Notably, the Public
Works East Yard Complex received LEED GOLD certification for its sustainable design.
Champion for Sustainability

Katherine Morrisseau-Sinclair, Winnipeg
Lake Winnipeg Water Walk was a spiritual and community journey which took place during
the summer of 2014. Katherine Morrisseau-Sinclair led the walk over 1,032 km and 28
days from Norway House to Manigotagan along Lake Winnipeg. The Water Walk is a
traditional Anishinaabe ceremony led by women to pray and perform ceremonies to
acknowledge and heal the spirit that lives in life-giving water. More than 100 women,
mostly grandmothers and dedicated community volunteers, joined the walk to raise public
awareness of the threat to the long-term sustainability of Lake Winnipeg.

Honourable Mention: Snoman Inc., Winnipeg
Snoman (Snowmobilers of Manitoba) Inc. has a mission to provide strong leadership and
support to its member clubs to develop and maintain safe and environmentally responsible
snowmobile trails to further the enjoyment of organized snowmobiling throughout Manitoba.
Snoman Inc. has promoted ecologically friendly practices and economic sustainability since
its launch in 1975.

Education for Sustainability

Youth Encouraging Sustainability (Y.E.S.), Winnipeg
Y.E.S. is an organization that encourages and facilitates youth-led sustainability projects.
These initiatives include hands-on field camps for students and educators related to
sustainability, hosting an annual showcase for student projects for sustainability and
hosting an annual Celebration of Sustainable Schools. Y.E.S. promotes understanding of
and engagement of today’s youth in the environmental, social and economic pillars of
sustainability.
Innovation and Research for Sustainability

Town of Niverville
The Town of Niverville is the 2014 recipient of the Innovation and Research for
Sustainability award for bioremediation of its sewage lagoon. They examined the feasibility
of remediating biowastes through on-site treatment using wetland and upland plants and
bioremediation, while meeting provincial environmental standards. Niverville hopes to set a
standard for other municipalities to construct and decommission their sewage lagoons,
helping them to remain environmentally friendly, sustainable and economically viable.
Sustainability in Pollution Prevention and Product Stewardship

CleanFARMS
For almost 25 years, CleanFARMS programs have supported sustainability by helping
Manitobans conserve valuable landfill space, reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and
energy use, while preventing air, land and water pollution. CleanFARMS operates one of
Canada’s longest-running voluntary stewardship programs and is one of the country’s first
adopters of the extended producer responsibility (EPR) principle.
Sustainable Community

ArtsJunktion, Winnipeg
ArtsJunktion supports the local arts and creative community through partnerships dedicated
to the collection and distribution of reusable materials. Its mandate also includes
supporting the environment by reducing materials going to the landfill and by increasing
environmental awareness through community engagement and programming.

Sustainability in Water and Natural Area Stewardship

Swan Valley Sport Fishing Enhancement Inc.
For the past 27 years, this non-profit organization has been dedicated to promoting game
fish conservation, education and game fish research. Swan Valley Sport Fishing
Enhancement Inc. has helped to create local sustainable fisheries, rehabilitate/reclaim
habitat, create environmental awareness and assist in sustainable environmental
management.

Honourable Mention: Keystone Agricultural Producers
Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) is an environmental leadership within the grower
community. KAP have been champions of sustainable agricultural practices and goals that
benefit all Manitobans.
