The development of spatial data infrastructure in Albania has begun in November 2003, when the
Albanian Geoinformation Board (AGB) organized a meeting with the national institutions of the country
to discuss and exchange information about GIS development in these institutions. In the coming years,
other AGB meetings have been organized. Almost in all meetings, it has been constantly discussed the
need for building the infrastructure of national spatial data. The Albanian Geoinformation Board (AGB)
and Military Geographic Institute (MGI) have undertaken activities related to the construction of the
National Spatial Data Infrastructure. The major goal of the development of spatial data infrastructure in
Albania is to build a national data network for the country in valuable and achievable standards for data
users. The solution of data network building problem must be done from national institutions. The
development of ADI must be integrated with regional and global spatial infrastructure. The development
of ADI implies somehow long process: The first phase relates to the development of ADI nodes,
agencies’ data base and metadata, a national central office and mechanism and standard nets. The second
phase, relates with the equal development of the first phase, only that the goal is different, to terminate the
development.
