MIDDLETON SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

MONDAY DECEMBER 19, 2011 6:30 P.M.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Saeger, Brar, Carey, Jansen, Lorman, Olson, Share

Call Meeting to Order

Saeger called the meeting to order at 6:32pm.

2.

Minutes of November 21, 2011

Moved by Share, seconded by Olson, to approve the minutes of November 21. Motion carried (6-0).

3.

Sustainable City Plan Goals

Committee members discussed 2012 goals. Brar requested quarterly updates from staff.

Carey and Schumacher will assist with zero waste efforts.

Schumacher, Saeger, and Byrne will assist with the water conservation contest.

Olson will assist with reviewing the current policies for pesticide use on public lands.

Schwartz and Brar will work on the Green Homes and Businesses Tour. (Attoun will ask Share if she would like to assist with this again).

 Saeger and Olson will work on Green Thursdays. (The film “Fresh” will be shown at

Willy Street Co-Op in January, and the film “The Dark Side of Chocolate” is a possibility for February).

Attoun will get a copy of the school district purchasing policy.

4.

Update on Construction & Demolition Ordinance

The C & D ordinance was recommended by the Public Works Committee and the License and Ordinance Committee. Next it will go to the Plan Commission and the Common Council.

5.

Update on Community Gardens

The Bock Garden shed is complete. Intern Danielle Fisher is working on a design for the downtown community garden. She will work with the school district on the project.

6.

Update on Permanent Recycling Drop-site

Saeger and Attoun provided an update on the first meeting to discuss a permanent recycling drop-site. Thus far, the scope of items to be considered are: electronics, metals, hard plastics, appliances, plastic bags, block Styrofoam, eyeglasses, durable medical goods, oil and oil filters, cardboard, batteries, reusable clothing or textiles, printer cartridges, cell phones, and athletic shoes. The group is preparing research from other communities and will meet in

Recommendation to Expand Committee to 10 Members (9 Voting)

The L & O committee will discuss this recommendation again at their January meeting.

Assistant City Attorney Matt Fleming is preparing a draft ordinance with the changes.

Common Council Updates

This item will be discussed at a future meeting.

Adjourn—next meeting scheduled for Monday, January 16, at 6:30

For the next agenda, the Committee will look at the sustainability expertise form that Saeger drafted.

Attoun will send the January Committee of the Whole agenda (where the Municipal Garage will be discussed) to the Committee.

Representatives of Meriter will be invited to a future meeting to discuss their plans for a new sustainable building and site.

Gabrielle Hinahara gave the committee an overview of the “Summer of Solutions” project that she and her sister, Natalie Hinahara, are working on. The project includes free workshops about growing food, art and writing, and sustainability, open garden work hours

(at the Middleton High School), group bike rides to deliver food to the Middleton Outreach

Ministry food pantry, as well as a kids’ activity table at the Downtown Middleton Farmer’s
