Section 2 - Main Duties
Main Function
of Post:
To take lead responsibility for a small research project
funded by xxxxx to investigate/establish xxxxx
Job Description:
 To plan and manage the work of the research team













ensuring the optimum use of resources and that the
overall project objectives are met
To design and conduct a successful programme of
investigation
To develop research projects to strengthen and
expand the existing programme of research
To identify sources of funding and contribute to the
process of securing funds to sustain the current
programme in new areas of research
To manage and monitor the research budget(s)
To manage the development of research team
members
To publish in high quality peer reviewed national and
international journals
To present research at national and international
conferences/meetings as appropriate
To develop research networks locally, nationally and
internationally in support of the research programme
To generate and pursue independent and original
research ideas in the field of research and support the
initiation of new lines of research in related areas
To provide guidance to other staff and students in
own specialist area, including supervising and
assessing undergraduate projects
To take part in knowledge – transfer activities,
including collaborative meetings with other research
groups
To maintain knowledge and understanding within the
field/specialism, transforming and applying knowledge
acquired from scholarship to research

Essential Criteria
Expertise/Competence/Skills
Proven effective interpersonal and communication skills including written and oral
presentation skills
Evidence of ability to manage a research project
Evidence of ability to attract MA and PhD students
Evidence of ability to lead a team
Ability to stimulate and motivate research students and staff
Ability to work on several projects concurrently
Ability to critically appraise research evidence
Ability to develop independent new research
Knowledge
A programme of personal research in the area of xxxx
An understanding of xxxxx and its applications
Expertise in xxxxx
Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to
develop further skills in and knowledge of research methods and techniques.
Qualifications (IT/Academic/Vocational)
A first class or good second class degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent
A PhD in relevant area, or other relevant equivalent research experience
Experience
A strong academic track record and have published in significant high impact
journals
A strong record of attracting external funding
Experience of successfully supervising and developing teams
A proven track record in delivering research projects to deadline and quality
Experience of successful PhD supervision
Specific Qualities (e.g. attitudes)
Willingness to play an active part in the life of the research group and the wider
School
Willingness to contribute to the teaching of the School as required
