Overview
Discrimination legislation requires service providers, including voluntary and
community organisations, to remove discrimination against disabled people. Most
funders and commissioners request information on organisations’ anti-discriminatory
practices. This training enables participants to identify attitudes, practices and
procedures which act as barriers to the full inclusion of disabled people and to
implement disability equality across all areas of operation.
Outcomes
By the end of the training you will:





have knowledge of disability discrimination legislation and how it affects your
organisation
be familiar with the Social and Medical models of disability and understand their
significance
be able to identify barriers to inclusion of disabled people as employees,
volunteers, and management committee members
be able to identify barriers to take-up of your services by disabled people
be able to recognise discriminatory language and replace it with more positive
terminology

Who the Event is For
Staff, volunteers and management committee members who:
- are responsible for ensuring that their organisation is accessible to disabled
people and that it complies with disability discrimination legislation
- have an input into decisions regarding services to disabled users and the
involvement of disabled people within their organisation
Trainer
Fowzia Anwar has over twenty five years experience of working in the third sector in a
range of local, regional and national organisations. For the last ten years she has
worked specifically in disability organisations and is currently Deputy Director of
Disability Action in the Borough of Barnet. She is passionate about promoting the
rights of disabled people.
