Thanks for your interest in the
Wright’s Chapel Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Land’Or
When? February 7, 2015
Where? The main beach at Lake Land’Or
Why? To raise money for local emergency assistance
Who? YOU!!!
Dress up in a silly costume and get ready to get wet! Costume contest will
start around 11:30 and we’ll hit the water at Noon!
It’s a great community event with music, activities, food, bonfires, hot
chocolate, s’mores and more!
Each participating church keeps the money its members raise to use in its
emergency assistance programs.
Money raised by plungers not affiliated with a participating church goes to
a community organization that helps those in need.
Since 2006, over 200 people have gotten cold so that others can stay warm
and raised over $100,000!!!
Be a part of this year’s event!
Start gathering your sponsors NOW!!

Costume Contest
While seeing people go in freezing water is quite entertaining, that’s not all the entertainment that
morning. Mama and Papa Bears are invited to participate in our costume contest prior to plunging.
We’ve had a nun, a mermaid, a polar bear and a bride and groom ready to “take the plunge” in past
contests. So be creative and come ready to have fun!
CAUTION – SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
EVERYONE MUST WEAR SHOES!!!!
Be prepared – Bring a change of clothing, towels and shoes.
Less is best! The less clothing worn in the water, the easier to remove after plunging.
It is very important to change into warm clothing after plunging.
Eat a light meal at least one hour before the event.
Be aware of the possibility, if you decide to completely submerge your body, you may
experience a loss of consciousness and/or light-headedness.
Absolutely no horseplay in the water!
NO DUNKING
Persons with medical problems should consult their doctor prior to participating in
this event.
Medical personnel will be on the premises to administer first aid.
If you are injured or feel ill during the event, please tell the medical personnel who are
on the scene even if you do not seek treatment. Anyone with heart problems – please
just be a cheerleader.
Do not stay in the water longer than 15 minutes. Body heat is lost 25 times faster in
water than air.
Do not remove clothing until plunge time. Event will be started with a flag and horn.
Do not drink alcohol. It does not warm you up – it accelerates hypothermia!
Drink warm fluids after the plunge to raise your body temperature.
VASELINE!! A coat of Vaseline can help insulate your body.
Polar Bear Plunge
Mama or Papa Bear
I have volunteered to be a Mama/Papa Bear at the Wright’s Chapel Polar
Bear Plunge at Lake Land’Or on February 7, 2015. You can support
emergency assistance in Caroline County and see me get very wet and very
cold at the same time! My goal is to raise $500 – please help!

The Wright’s Chapel Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Land’Or began in response to the rising costs of home
heating with our first plunge in February, 2006. Since then, over 200 people have gotten cold so that others
can stay warm and have raised over $100,000! The money has been distributed through the participating
churches and the Caroline County Department of Social Services, CERVE (Caroline Emergency Relief
Volunteer Efforts), the St. Mary’s Food Bank, and Glory Outreach.
With the current state of the economy, the need for emergency assistance is even higher and growing every day. We hope to
make the 2015 Plunge the most successful yet as we strive to help families in Caroline County keep warm this winter. This
year the funds will be distributed through the participating churches, the St. Mary’s Food Bank and Glory Outreach in
Bowling Green.
Sponsoring businesses will have their logo/business name on event t-shirts and will receive a sticker to put in the window of
the business to let customers know of the support. Businesses that donate at least $500 will have the opportunity to have a
table inside the lodge during the event (space is limited – first come, first served). Sponsors should pledge their support by
January 1st and send a PDF of their company logo to molly@wrightschapel.org.
There are various ways to sponsor the Plunge. Business can make a financial contribution or an in-kind contribution. In
2009, we had sponsors donate $100-$500, t-shirts, printing services, and building fees. Businesses could:
•
Sponsor the costume contest and provide the prize.
•
Provide towels for the plungers to dry off (could have the Plunge logo and/or your business name)
•
Provide our participant t-shirts
•
Sponsor an ad in the Caroline Progress
•
Provide prizes for the top fund-raising plungers
Businesses are welcome to suggest other options for sponsorship as well. Please fill out the attached form and return to
Wright’s Chapel UMC – Polar Bear Plunge, P.O. Box 193, Ladysmith VA 22501.
