Against fossil fuel money in US politics – Obama End the ‘Climate Silence’

'Koch International' at Fountain House, 130 Fenchurch Street, in the City . Map here.
5.00 pm to 6.00 pm: Activists will travel in the banner-clad "Dirty money and climate lies" open-topped bus from
the City to the US embassy at Grosvenor Square, W1.
6.00 pm: “Tea Party” at the US embassy in Grosvenor Square, London Map here.

President Obama gagged – observing ‘climate silence’
Speeches from prominent Republicans, members of the ‘Tea Party’ and Kock-Brothers-funded think tanks:
Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, James Inhofe, Dick Armey, Paul Ryan et al …………….. on how God
wouldn’t allow global warming and its all a socialist-inspired hoax. Mitt Romney performing somersaults. President Obama
saying nothing at all.
Phil Thornhill from the Campaign against Climate Change said
“President Obama must now break his ‘climate silence’, stop allowing the denialist extreme right to dominate the
agenda on climate change and speak out on the issue. This he can do even if a Republican-dominated House of
Representatives sabotages real action on climate, but he should do his utmost to secure that action, too.
Until the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy forced it onto the agenda an erie “climate silence” was reigning in the US.
Even as Arctic ice shrank to a record-shattering low and the US endured its worst drought in decades, sending food prices
spiraling. This ‘climate silence’ represented the extraordinary power of fossil fuel money in forcing the issue off the agenda
– in part by funding a takeover of the Republican party by an extremist, science-denying Tea Party ideology. None have
been more active in this process than the Koch Brothers, billionaire libertarian ideologues and owners of a massive fossilfuel-based conglomerate. The Koch-funded “Americans for Prosperity” was instrumental in the creation of the Tea party and
this year the brothers have aimed to raise $ 400 million for the election effort of a now thoroughly climate sceptic
Republican party.
This stifling of the climate issue in the world’s most powerful country has had a paralysing effect on the international
climate negotiations and any hope of achieving the internationally coordinated action that this global crisis demands. In
effect the American Right and the fossil fuel interests that fund it, are holding the whole world to ransom on climate change.
Its now time for Obama to stand up to the extreme right and fossil fuel interests, speak out on climate and do his
utmost to get the global process to tackle the climate threat rolling again”
