Jayathirtha Rao’s research focus is on design of simple organic molecules experience
polarization or charge transfer or zwitterion formation in the singlet excited state giving
rise to several novel phenomena.
Charge phenomena in photochemically excited olefins were established through
photochemical E-Z (trans-cis) isomerization involving: (1) Ionic-photodissociation; (2)
Discovery of “quantum-chain isomerization”; (3) Regioselective isomerization; (4) Oneway isomerization; (5) Fluorescence solvatochromism; (6) Wavelength dependent
photoisomerization and (7) selective formation of thermodynamically less stable “Z”
isomer.
Significance of excited state charge phenomena is elegantly demonstrated by making
organic materials having optical applications like (i) Non Linear Optics; (ii) Solar Cells;
(iii) Organic Light Emitting Devices; (iv) Organic Near Infrared Absorbing Dyes; (v)
Photoacid Generators.
“Molecule – Material – Device” concept demonstrated.
Organic photochemistry laboratory established, photochemical processes were developed
and technology transferred.
Synthesis of new chemical entities carried out, having pharmaceutical and agrochemical
significance using “scaffold” and “structure” based approaches. Established a group for
the synthesis of heterocycles having biological activity.
Pesticide processes were developed and technologies transferred. Involved in the
commisoning of the reactor at the clients factory.
Analytical methods developed using HPLC for drugs and drug formulations.
Strategic material processes developed and evaluation of photoresists established.
Involved as a team member in Organization for Prohibition of Chemicals of Warfare
(OPCW) project, where IICT earned a Global recognition
Initiated research on emerging technologies like Organic Solar Cells and Light Emitting
Devices.
Several overseas projects handled and completed successfully.
Femto Laser Facility Creation at IICT
Collaborated with Physicists, Biologists, Microbiologists, Chemical Eng., Electronic

Popularization
of
Science/
Teaching is a fascination and taught chemistry courses at several places. Acted as course
coordinator for NIPER-Hyderabad and was involved in bringing various teaching experts
to conduct and complete the NIPER MSPharm courses. Delivered several popular science
chemistry lectures with chemiluminescence demonstration. AcSIR chemistry syllabus
framed. Presently teaching for AcSIR students at IICT.
Life member of Indo German Nachkontakt Association (IGNA)-Hyderabad, also acted as
vice president, secretary, treasurer, member, and joint secretary for IGNA on several
occasions during these 25 years. Several programes conducted in popularizing science or
chemistry with the help of IGNA, DAAD, Max Mueller Bhavan-Chennai and Goethe
Zentrum-Hyderabad. Several conferences, seminars and meetings conducted with the
sponsorship of IGNA, DAAD-New Delhi and Alexander vonHumboldt Foundation,
Germany.
Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (London) and also acting as executive
member of RSC-Deccan Section Hyderabad for the past 4 years. Under the RSC banner
and with the available funds, reached school children, PUC/Inter, BSc, MSc and PhD
students with the cause of Advancing the Chemical Sciences. Toured rural areas of
Andhra Pradesh with a cause of encouraging school children and urging them to take
science or chemistry as career.
Served as member of several committees of IICT for the smooth functioning of the
Institute. Involved in the initial establishment of NIPER-Hyderabad and contributed
immensely for the establishment of NIPER by acting as course coordinator, controller of
exams, teaching courses, hostel warden, placement officer and other duties also. Actively
contributed in framing plan projects of IICT. Acted as member of selection committees.
Editorial Board Referee for ARKIVOC journal. Continued to act as referee or reviewer
for several reputed journals. Top tier reviewer recognition received from Organic Letters.
Special Appreciation Letter given from American Chemical Society Journals
Department. Editorial Board Member Indian Journal of Chemistry. Received
"Outstanding Reviewer" appreciation from Tetrahedron Journal. Receieved a special
"Reviewer Appreciation" from Tetrahedron Letters Journal.
THREE Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Research Associates visited and
worked with me at IICT.
Participated in Euro-India Week at Univ. of Wuerzburg, Wuerzburg, Germany as a
Panelist by invitation from Alumni, Uni. Wuerzburg and DAAD.
Initiated Overseas Collaborations.
