THOMAS STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL

Health & Physical Education

Fitness and Nutrition Unit Overview

Our first unit in HPE is a key component of the HPE curriculum. It serves as both a PE and a Health Unit. As you may or may not know, these are separate marks on the report card.

This unit will consist of the following:

Pre-Test – 800 m Timed Run.

Brainstorm – class discussion re: Fitness concepts such as FITT

Web – organizing the concepts

Question: How can I use training principals such as FITT to help me improve my

Cardio?

Goal Setting: SMART goal.

FITT Plan- In Summary

F - Frequency – 3-4-5 times per week, build in rest

I – Intensity- Heartrate between 150 – 180 beats/min or 25-30 beats/10 s

T Time – 20 min minimum – 60 min maximum

T – Type – Cardio type of activity such as run/walk/cycle/rollerblade/swim/skip

Calendar – Dual purpose to plan out activities/workouts for many weeks to track activities/workouts and parent verification

Just because something is planned does not mean it happens.

HPE classes will have workouts for a while, but we will move onto a new unit requiring students to add workouts to their schedule.

Running Routes Assignments: Using an online program students will create 3 routes. 400 m, 800 m and a 2 km route that is based around your home. Info to come. Hopefully, they might use these routes for runs/walks/cycling at home.

Nutrition Movie and lessons and assignments including Food Labels, daily tracking and analysis of food intake.:

Grade 6 – Weight of the World

Grade 7 – Super Size Me

Grade 8

– Fathead

In order to meet their goals, students will need to plan, organize, and track workouts at school, home and at other activities. Our hope that with your involvement, many students will be successful. On the next page you will find the levels for some of the cardio workouts we do.
