Riga, 1999 ABSTRACT The thesis summarize the results of the study of odd-odd rare-earth nuclei belonging to the transitional deformation region. Both the construction of model-independent level schemes and the interpretation of nuclear structure using nuclear models are considered. The level schemes of odd-odd nuclei are interpreted in the framework of geometrical approach employing the rotor-plus-two quasiparticles model. Especial attention is given to the effects specific for transitional nuclei, i.e. vibrational bands, octupole deformation and the large mixing of rotational bands with ∆K = 0, due to the high level density. The systematics of general characteristics of developed level schemes throughout deformation region with 150 < A < 195 is analysed as well.
