Separating a Mixture
There are various methods that can be used to separate the different substances in a
mixture. In this activity, you will use your problem-solving skills to think about how to
separate and recover the substances in a mixture.
Using only the apparatus and materials listed below, make a five-step plan to separate
the five different substances in the mixture. Each step should be about separating one
of the substances from the mixture. For each step, explain in detail what to do and
include a labeled diagram.
Available Apparatus:

flask
magnet
spoon
filter paper
tongs
funnel
hot plate
Materials:
 water
 mixture made up of sand, salt, iron filings, small Styrofoam bits, and 3 plastic
balls
