HCA STUDY DAY ON PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA & B12 INJECTIONS
Defines the part played by Vitamin B12 in health, a basic
understanding of the underlying conditions which are treated with
this therapy, guidelines for safe use including working within the
legal requirements of delegated responsibility, patient information
and education including reporting and adverse reactions and
managing side effects.

MINOR ILLNESS - MINOR INJURY COURSE IN PLYMOUTH

The programme will focus on the management of minor illness and
minor injury problems commonly presented to nurses within setting
such as general practice, schools and HM Prison Service. It will
include recognition of signs and symptoms and the development of
management plans including self-care and the use of over-thecounter and prescription remedies. This course offers optional
academic accreditation, 20 credits at degree level.

DAY FOR HCAS ON SUPPORTING PATIENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH
ISSUES, LEARNING DISABILITIES AND / OR DEMENTIA

An awareness of National initiatives and guidance that impact on
care, promoting mental health and in caring for people affected by
mental health problems, supporting the physical health of patients
with learning disabilities and mental illness, risk factors, symptoms
and the recognition of depression.

VENEPUNCTURE MORNING
Specifically designed to equip HCAs and nurses new to this task
with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to effectively and
safely take blood in a General Practice setting.

SUPPORTING PATIENTS WITH ARTHRITIC CONDITIONS
Arthritis is the most common long term condition in the UK. This
day is designed to address the practical issues involved in
supporting the 10 million patients who live with this condition,
their families and carers. This day is suitable for both nurses and
HCAs.

EAR CARE STUDY DAY FOR HEALTHCARE ASSISTANTS
3 March
A day to prepare HCAs to safely and competently perform simple
ear irrigation (this is not the Rotherham Course but adheres to local
and National Guidelines). Participants will need to work with a
mentor in practice in order to establish competence after
attending this day.
FOUNDATIONS OF GENERAL PRACTICE NURSING PROGRAMME

This course is specifically designed for nurses new to general
practice - 18 taught days plus 15 hours of one-to-one coaching in
the workplace. Optional accreditation - 60 credits at degree level.

ASTHMA & COPD MODULE

This programme will provide an in-depth exploration of Asthma and
COPD with a focus on diagnosis and management within Primary
Care. Students will be encouraged to critique updated guidelines
and national strategies, consider the global impact on patients and
develop knowledge and skills to improve practice. Incorporating
the theory and practice of spirometry, this module will equip
practitioners to provide quality care to those suffering from
obstructive lung disease 'from cradle to grave'. This course carries
optional accreditation – 20 credits at degree level.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE & STROKE MANAGEMENT MODULE
14 & 15 May

11 & 12 June
A four day module for practice nurses including risk assessment,
lifestyle and behaviour change, hypertension, pharmaceutical and
non-pharmaceutical therapies, CHD, acute and long term
management including cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac investigations
including electro-cardiography, atrial fibrillation, stroke and other
vascular disease management. This module carries optional
academic accreditation – 20 credits at degree level.

HCAS STUDY DAY ON NUTRITION & HEALTH
5 June
What every HCA needs to know about a good diet: what is it? I just
look at a cake and the weight creeps on. How are nutrients dealt
with in the body? Nutrition throughout lifespan. Obesity
management and behaviour change. Health problems and nutrition:
kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease
plus interaction with medicines.

2-DAY INFLUENZA & PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINATION COURSE FOR
EXPERIENCED HCAS
1 & 8 July

The course provides the theory and practice to enable experienced
healthcare assistants to safely administer influenza and
pneumococcal vaccinations in line with the guidelines provided by
the RCN. The HCA participant will need a qualified nurse mentor in
practice who will be required attend the afternoon session on day
two.

INFLUENZA & PNEUMOCOCCAL UPDATE MORNING FOR EXPERIENCED
HCAS
This session is specifically for HCAs who have undertaken the
Influenza & Pneumococcal course to keep them up to date with any
changes that have taken place in the last 12 months.
