History of the Slavonic-Roman border
The course presents a critical review of several turning points in the developement of SlavicRoman and particularly Slovene-Italian relations in the process of formation of the SloveneItalian border. According to this it considers basic political, social, economic and cultural
characteristics. The emphasis is on 19th and 20th century, therefore in the period that Slovene,
Croat and Italian national identities were formated.

• Slavic-Roman and Slovene-Italian neighbouring in the Venetian-Habsburg period, 1st
half of 19th century;
• The Italian »risorgimento« and Italian plans about the »east border«;
• The slovenian national rebirth and conditions in the Littoral since 1848;
• Discussion about the appertainance of Trieste;
• 1866 and Venetian Slovenians – first Slovenians under the Italian state;
• World war I;
• 1918 – The downfall of the Habsburg monarchy, Italian occupation of the Littoral and
the fight for the italian-yugoslav border on the Paris peace conference;
• 1920 – Treaty of Rapallo;
• The 20 years of fascism;
• Antifascist resistance of Slovenians;

• The bounary after world war II (Paris peace trety 1947, London memorandum 1954
and Treaty of Osimo 1975);
• The position of the Slovenian minority in Italy since the end of world war II until

• The problem of arrests, deportations and nonlegal liquidations (so-called fojbe);
