Shakopee, MN -- A crowd of 6,105 turned out to say goodbye to live racing for 2008 as Canterbury Park’s 67-day meet
came to a close. The race fans were treated to a 10-race program including three stake races at the Shakopee oval. The
$50,000 Shakopee Stakes went to long shot Let It Rock. Trainer Mac Robertson and jockey Derek Bell, meet leaders in
their respective professions, won two stakes as Angel Smoke won the $50,000 Dean Kutz Stakes and Sir Tricky won the
$35,000 Kenny Schoepf Stakes.
The Shakopee Stakes, which included Grade 2 winner Wayzata Bay, Claiming Crown Rapid Transit winner and
Canterbury’s 2008 Horse of the Meet Eagle Storm, and multiple stakes winner Prospective Kiss, went to long shot Let It
Rock at odds of 16-1. Trained by Judith Hicklin and ridden by Adolpho Morales, the 3-year-old son of Trippi was taken to
the back of the pack in the early stages of the race by Morales before he swung wide on the far turn and advanced down
the stretch to win by one and a quarter lengths over a fast track. Let It Rock, owned by Hicklin Farms LLC and Tom
Gregerson, covered the 1 mile and 70 yards in 1:42.08 and returned $34.80 to win.
“I always thought he was going to be a really nice horse,” Hicklin said of the winner. “The farther he goes the longer his
stride gets.” Hicklin also trains second place finisher Wayzata Bay. Third in the Shakopee was Prospective Kiss.

Angel Smoke, ridden by leading jockey Derek Bell and conditioned by champion trainer Mac Robertson, won the $50,000
Dean Kutz Stakes. The 4-year-old filly tracked the leaders early and surged in deep stretch to win by half a length,
covering the one mile and 70 yards in 1:43.01. Owned by Jer-Mar Stable LLC, Angel Smoke returned $4.40.
“Winning is always a great time,” said owner Jerry Myers. “This is a nice filly but I was afraid she would drop back too
far. Derek (Bell) kept her up there and rode her very well.”
Sir Tricky employed his customary late kick to win the $35,000 Kenny Schoepf Stakes for owners Barry and Joni Butzow
of Eden Prairie, MN. Bell rode and Robertson trained the 7-year-old Minnesota-bred who covered the six furlong distance
in 1:10.41 and paid $4.20 to win.
