THE DALES WAY HANDBOOK
Published February 2012
by the Dales Way Association
The Dales Way is a long distance footpath of about 80 miles from Ilkley to Bowness-onWindermere. By following as far as possible riverside paths, it offers a scenically attractive
route from urban West Yorkshire to the Lake District, which any reasonably fit family can
undertake in a week's holiday. Although not always well served by public transport the Way
passes through many villages, and so accommodation is not a problem, although it is
advisable to book it in advance.
A little bit of history
It’s now 43 years since a small group of members of the West Riding Area of the
Ramblers’ Association launched what was to become the Dales Way. The 1968
Countryside Act had offered local authorities powers to create new public access areas
alongside rivers and canals, and the idea developed to have a continuous walking route
along the Wharfe from Ilkley on the edge of the Dales to its source high on Cam Fell above
Langstrothdale.
But Cam Fell seemed too remote a place to end a walk, so the idea emerged to link it with
Dentdale and ramble onwards to Sedbergh. But from Sedbergh the next logical step was to
take it up little known Lunesdale to the old Yorkshire boundary at Crook of Lune and then
across a series of gentle valleys formed by the rivers Mint, Sprint and Kent to reach
eventually the shores of Windermere in the heart of the Lake District National Park. And so
the concept of the Dales Way was born, a footpath which linked the industrial West Riding
with two National Parks.
The first short route description was published in a pamphlet by the Ramblers in May 1969.
This was followed by a public walk over the first 7 miles of the Dales Way from Ilkley Old
Bridge to Bolton Abbey attended by over 120 people. From that moment the Dales Way
took off. At least 10 guidebooks have been published, several maps, and for many years
now this annual Handbook. Additional link paths were negotiated, providing attractive
walks from the centres of Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate to the Dales Way. A survey in the
1990s indicated that the Dales Way was by then the fourth most popular walking route in
Britain, with an estimated 4,000 people per year walking the route.
In 1991 the Dales Way Association was formed. Its objectives were to support the
maintenance, signposting and waymarking of the route, to encourage the interpretation
and conservation of the Dales Way, to take an active role in marketing and promoting the
Dales Way in appropriate ways and to keep a register of accommodation, route changes,
transport and related facilities for the benefit of users of the Dales Way. The Association
designed and produced a distinctive waymark, which was accepted by the various highway
authorities along the route. There are now close relationships with these authorities, and
officers of the Association meet regularly with officers of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

cards are accepted. Maps and guides may also be purchased through their website: www.guidepost.uk.com
The Dales Way on the Internet
The Dales Way Association has its own official website at www.dalesway.org.uk. It features information on
the route, to some extent mirroring that contained in this Handbook, but also provides updates on
accommodation and matters affecting the route. Email is info@dalesway.org.uk
Much useful information can also be found on the Sherpa Van Project site (www.thedalesway.co.uk). Details
of any difficulties, obstructions, etc, encountered on the route should be sent to the Footpath Officer, the
3
Dales Way Association, PO Box 1065, Bradford, BD1 9JY, who will take them up with the relevant highway
authority.
There is a new detailed online map of the Dales Way, created by two DWA members, Jacquetta Megarry and
Peter Stott. They have overlaid the route on Google maps (not to be confused with Google Earth). It's hosted
on the Rucksack Readers website, but anybody with a web browser can use it freely. The link is
www.rucsacs.com/books/Dales-Way then click "Route map". (For more screen space, click also "View
larger map".) This offers an unprecedented level of detail: in satellite mode you can zoom no less than 10
times (area times 100) The result lets you zoom to fill your screen with an aerial view of Bolton Priory, count
the 24 arches on Ribblehead Viaduct and view the Crosdale Beck diversion passing through the
embankment by its tiny arch. For navigating any tricky sections, it's invaluable to see an accurate route line
related to features on the ground such as Lobwood House, Black Moss Tarn, and the B5284 at Cleabarrow.
If you like to plan in advance, it's worth following the route online before you walk, or you may enjoy viewing it
as a reminiscence after your hike. And if you experience a problem on the route that you want to report,
locating it on this map may save time and give the Association’s Footpath Officer more information. In terrain
mode, you can view contours, hill names and roads, and you can always "search nearby" (e.g. to locate
B&Bs or food) and use street view. So it's a powerful planning tool as well as a fascinating eagle's eye view
of the Dales Way.
A tip, if you are about to use this extensively, is to decide what the objective of the exercise is, then adjust the
height you want to operate from. At the lowest level if you are looking at all the features, I do not think you will
progress a mile a minute.
Walking the Dales Way
Most people will want to walk the Dales Way from Ilkley to Bowness, so the information which follows on
public transport and accommodation is arranged accordingly. From outside the area, the easiest access to
Ilkley is likely to be through Leeds, from which Ilkley can also be reached on foot via the Leeds-Ilkley Dales
Way Link, a fine walk in its own right.
How the route is to be divided up into daily stages will be a matter of individual choice, but we would like to
draw attention to the crossing from Upper Wharfedale to Dentdale, the highest and most exposed part of the
Way. A number of walkers have come to grief by underestimating the difficulty and length of this section.
Most walkers start the Dales Way on a Saturday/Sunday. This means that most of them are looking for
accommodation in the same places on the same days. In the more remote areas this can lead to problems in
finding somewhere to stay. IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN, TRY TO START YOUR WALK ON A WEEKDAY.
In the summer walkers may have to contend with midges along some riverside paths. Insect repellent and
antihistamines may be useful.
COMPANIES OFFERING SERVICES
For walkers who would prefer to have their walk organised for them, or who would like help with baggage
transportation, etc, the following companies offer various services:

The Dales Way starts in Ilkley, but there are link routes to Ilkley from Bradford, Harrogate and Leeds.
The Bradford-Ilkley Dales Way Link. Bradford City Council published in August 2007 a route from Bradford
city centre to Shipley. A detailed description of the whole 12½ mile link route from Bradford to Ilkley can be
found at: http://www.bradford.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/E6F66725-DAC6-48A6-A42D. Although on the map
Bradford-Shipley looks unpromising as a walking route, in fact this section is surprisingly pleasant. Although a
certain amount of it is on pavements, there is also much countryside, from the Boars Well nature reserve, a
long, contouring band of woodland, to the fields (with horses and sheep) and woodland at the end of Holling
Lose Lane and the steep climb up the grass bank towards Bolton Woods, with fine views back to the city
centre. At the following points I found the published description wrong or misleading. What was the
Goldsborough pub is now the Corn Dolly. I noticed no fork in the path after the bollards at the top of Holling
Lose Lane, you just keep straight on. On the way down to Chestnut Grove, I didn’t find that the paths merged
– one should keep to the right hand one. And again the path off Powell Road doesn’t divide, and there’s no
vehicle barrier at the bottom. The stone bridge you need over Bradford Beck is not the first, but the second.
And having left Valley Road, there are no metal security railings on the left for some considerable distance:
what you have is a high wall. But these are minor niggles: the description is full and usually clear and
accurate. From Shipley the route is also described in guidebooks no.1 2 3 and 6 (see page 2). At the bottom
of Station Road turn left (A657) to the traffic lights at the junction with the A6038. Turn right there: almost
immediately the road crosses the Leeds – Liverpool canal. Cross the canal bridge, turn left down to the
towpath and follow the Dales Way along the towpath for the next mile. See OS map Explorer 288.

The Harrogate-Ilkley Dales Way Link (Explorer 297 Lower Wharfedale).
Some years ago the Harrogate Group of the Ramblers’ Association compiled a link route from Harrogate to
the Dales Way near Bolton Abbey, via Haverah Park, the Washburn valley and the Barden Fell Access Area
(the Harrogate Dalesway). The disadvantage of this route was that the Access Area is closed on several
days during the grouse shooting season and at times of high fire risk. For this reason in August 2010 the
Group inaugurated a new Dales Way Link, which links Harrogate and Ilkley. It is described in a leaflet
obtainable from the Chairman of the Group, Peter L. Goldsmith, 20 Pannal Ash Grove, Harrogate HG2 0HZ
(price £1 + an A5 stamped, addressed envelope).
The Leeds-Ilkley Dales Way Link (O.S. 1:50 000 sheet 104 Leeds & Bradford, 1:25 000 Explorer 289,
297).
The official Leeds-Ilkley Dales Way link starts at Woodhouse Moor, diagonally opposite the top corner of the
University of Leeds (no. 1 bus from Bishopgate Street, Leeds Rail Station; the bus journey is about 15
minutes) and leads via Eccup Reservoir and Otley Chevin to Ilkley (17 miles). It is more a ridge walk than a
valley walk, with fine views over Wharfedale. The entire route is shown in guidebooks no. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6
(see page 2), so no description is needed here.
As the Dales Way is however essentially a valley walk, the purist may want to approach Ilkley from Leeds
along Airedale (19 miles).
From the main entrance to Leeds Station cross the forecourt to a circular white building with a notice saying
'Way Out Bishopgate'. Go down the stairs and turn right, to pass under the railway lines. Pass the Leeds
Hilton Hotel and cross the River Aire by Victoria Bridge (look right to see the lock which marks the start of the
Leeds and Liverpool Canal). Turn right along Water Lane, and after a few yards fork right again between
former warehouses. Keep straight on to reach the old Canal Office beside a canal bridge (nice view of Leeds
Basin to the right). Cross the bridge and turn left along the canal towpath. Follow the towpath for the next 12
miles.
Shortly after passing Sir Titus Salt's Saltaire Mills (GR 141 382) - it is worthwhile, by the way, making a
detour left into Saltaire village to look at the rest of the excellent architecture and the David Hockney Gallery
in Salt’s Mill - you will reach a canal lock. This is where you join the Bradford-Ilkley Dales Way Link for the
crossing from Airedale into Wharfedale. From here the route is shown in guidebooks no.1 2 and 5, so no
detailed description is needed.
Dales Way alternatives
There are no official Dales Way alternatives, but there are several unofficial alternatives, all of them attractive
walks, which some walkers might find useful
The Airedale–Malham-Pennine Way alternative.
As mentioned above, from Leeds the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath can be used through Airedale. If
you stay on it through Skipton and on to Gargrave, you can there pick up the Pennine Way, which will take
you up Airedale to Malham. Stay on the Pennine Way to Horton in Ribblesdale, and continue with it to the
Cam High Road, where you will meet the official route of the Dales Way. This is a very attractive walk in its
own right, the possible disadvantage being of course that you see nothing of Wharfedale.
The Cam Houses to Newby Head alternative
This is very highly recommended. It is 1½ miles shorter than the official route, is easier underfoot, after an
initial 15-minute climb is almost entirely level or downhill and has fine views. It uses a new bridleway created
by the Yorkshire Dales National Park in connection with the Pennine Bridleway.
Following the Dales Way, you reach the buildings of Cam Houses through a large gate. The farmhouse is on
your right. Follow the track through the yard, but just after crossing the beck, where the official Dales Way
bears left, turn right up the steep tarmac farm access road. At the top of the steepest part of the climb,
another track comes in from the left and the surface becomes stony. Bear right and continue gently uphill.

When you reach a T-junction turn right, and the surface is once more tarmac. You are now on Cam High
Road, a Roman road. Dodd Fell is straight ahead. Follow this road until you pass through a metal gate across
it. This is Cold Keld Gate (at 1870’, 570m higher than any point on the official Dales Way). On the left there is
a wooden field gate, waymarked as a bridleway. You are going to follow it all the way to the B6255 at Newby
Head.
Go through the gate and turn left along the clear grassy track. Pass through a low broken down wall. A few
minutes later there is a good view right down the valley of Snaizeholme Beck. As you approach the next wall,
Whernside looms large ahead. Pass through a bridle-gate in this well-maintained wall, here leaving the old
North Riding and re-entering the old West Riding of Yorkshire. This is Gavel Gap, the start of the Ribble Way,
the source of the River Ribble being nearby. The white house you can see in the distance is Newby Head
Farm. From here the surface of the bridleway has been improved. Cross a cobbled ford at the confluence of
Jam Sike and Long Gill. You reach the B6255 through a bridle-gate. Cross the road to the continuation of the
bridleway, which soon leads you round to the Dent road. From here it is a further 5 minutes to the start on the
right of the Upper Dentdale alternative (see below), from there another 10 minutes to where the official route
joins this road from the left. Just over 1½ hours from Cam Houses.
The Upper Dentdale High Level alternatives (a shorter and a longer one)
When you emerge on to the motor road at GR 786 835, the Dales Way turns left along it to descend into
Dentdale. Purists will want to follow this route, which is an attractive valley walk, downhill all the way, but it
has the disadvantage of being along the main road through the dale with the consequent traffic, and it is
enclosed, with few views.
An alternative is available which is largely traffic-free, along an old drove road, the Galloway Gate, formerly
used to bring cattle down from Scotland, which offers good walking. It does however involve a steady, but not
steep, pull up to 1805’ (550m) (higher than any point on the official Dales Way), but the resulting views (from
the longer alternative) down Dentdale and to the surrounding fells are superb. The shorter alternative, which
re-joins the official Dales Way on the road at Arten Gill, will take about 1½ hours, the longer one, which rejoins the official route at Lea Yeat, about 2½ hours.
Instead of turning left along the road, to descend into Dentdale, turn right along it. In about ten minutes you
will reach on the left a large wooden field gate and a small metal bridle gate side by side. This is Newby Head
Gate. Go through the bridle gate and follow the broad metalled track, which immediately begins to climb. As
you get higher, pause to look back. All Three Peaks are visible: Pen-y-ghent half-left, further right the stepped
profile of Ingleborough and further right again the whaleback of Whernside. You pass through a gate: the
metalled surface ends, but the track continues clear ahead in an old walled lane. In this field you may come
across a herd of Belted Galloway cattle, which seems appropriate in view of the name of the track. The valley
to the right is Widdale. Pass through another gate: the track is now level for a time, before it bends left and
climbs to the highest point. Now the grassy track, a pleasure to walk on, is once more level for a time, before
starting to descend. There is a particularly good view down Widdale. You pick up a wall on the left and follow
it down to a cross track.
This is the old drove road from Dentdale to Wensleydale, now part of the Pennine Bridleway. Go through the
large new gate on the left. On the left is an information panel about Arten Gill and its viaduct. The shorter
alternative keeps straight ahead and follows the Pennine Bridleway down Arten Gill, eventually passing
under the viaduct and re-joining the road. The longer alternative turns right through another gate and climbs
the slopes of Great Knoutberry Fell in the remains of an old walled lane. Pass through a gate and climb to the
highest point of this section (1785’, 544m). The great delight of the next part of the walk is watching the views
of Dentdale slowly unfold down on the left. Down half left is the Arten Gill railway viaduct. There are more
views of Ingleborough and Whernside. The main fells to the left of Dentdale are Whernside, Great Coum and
Middleton Fell, to the right of the valley is Rise Hill, to its right in the distance are the Howgill Fells, and to
their right, nearer to hand, is the long whaleback of Baugh Fell. You will pass through three more gates. After
the second gate Wild Boar Fell appears to the right of Baugh Fell. When you reach the next motor road (the
Coal Road, another old drove road) turn left down it and follow it all the way to the bottom, passing the
entrance to Dent Station on the way. At the bottom (Lea Yeat) keep forward to cross the river by the road
12
bridge, then turn right over the stile to follow the riverside path. You have now re-joined the official Dales
Way.
Some places where you might go wrong
At St Peters Church, Addingham (GR 085 497), some walkers cut across the field before the church, instead
of entering the churchyard and leaving it by the main gate, which is the correct Dales Way route.
When you reach the B6160 at Farfield Hall, do not turn right along this busy and dangerous road, but cross
into the grounds of the Friends’ Meeting House and follow the footpath through. Then take the permissive
path, behind the wall alongside the B6160, which leads back onto the road after 700 metres. Don’t turn left at
the 5 bar gate (GR 071 5235) and head up to Lob Wood and the old railway.
In Grassington go up past the market square and turn left at Chapel Street. Turn right at Bank Lane. At the
top of the lane, the fingerpost directs you left, through the gate, to the waymarked footpath onto Lea Green. It
is easier to carry on up the green lane, which leads out onto the moor, there to join the footpath, thus
avoiding the stiles.
Just before Laithbank (GR 734 8585) be careful to turn right down the farm road, (i.e. don’t continue to the
farm) then turn left at the bottom to Tub Hole.
The waymarked finger post on the Sedbergh to Kirkby Lonsdale road at GR 631 911 is in the hedge. Stay
alert.
Leaving High Oaks, then up the green lane, heading for Luneside, you must head for the north west corner of
the field to another green lane (GR 627 915) ignoring the stile and finger post in the corner of the field to your
right. After leaving Luneside Farm (GR 6295 918) you should strike half left across the field for the stile in the
fence. After crossing the stile there may be a bull in the field with his cows. There is plenty room for all of you!
Leaving Beck Foot, at the top of the track you enter a field at GR 613 9625. Leave the field by a stone/wire
fence in the top left hand corner (as you face west) after 450 metres at GR 609 961.
The cattle bridge over the M6 GR 600 957 leads to Lambrigg Head Farm Turn sharp left before entering this
large farm. The Dales Way is along the farm road, diverted 6 years ago from the field.
Pay particular attention to route finding on the Lambrigg Head to Grayrigg Foot section, where a number of
walkers have got lost. Approaching Moresdale Hall, after the barn conversion and “Refreshments” sign on
your right (GR 5865 9600), go over the bridge, turn right then left into the shrubbery. There is a finger post
and waymarks. Do not go through the gate into Moresdale Hall.
After Thatchmoor Head, (GR 5795 9590) go over the railway bridge, and keep the railway on your left for 410
metres to reach the waymarked finger post to direct you 90 degrees to the right to follow the footpath. If you
cut across the field you will be in [wet] trouble, and have to retrace your steps.
Approaching Shaw End it is easy to miss the kissing-gate on the left. The Dales Way does not pass the big
house.
After crossing the footbridge over the River Mint GR 562 9695 and joining and following the minor road, exit
this road by an old metal kissing gate in the hedge on the left. Before you reach the kissing gate, pass, but do
not cross, a stile on your left.
At Black Moss Tarn the Dales Way strikes right up the slope and does not follow the well-used path straight
on by the tarn.
Cross the A6 to Burton House and Billy’s serve yourself café. As you leave the shed and enter the field, strike
half right to the field corner stile, which is obscured. The waymark is unable to convey the exact direction.
When you reach the minor road at GR 5195 9600 turn right and enter the field on the left, waymarked, at
Oakbank Cottages. The footpath crosses the stone wall halfway down the field, now waymarked. There could
be a bull in this field at times with his harem.
Crag House (GR 435 966), Outrun Nook and Hag End seem to attract the wanderlust in some of our walkers.
All way marks are in place to follow.
The junction, where the footpath joins the BOAT (bridleway open to all traffic) at GR 422 971 is a favourite
place for walkers to lose their sense of direction. Turn left. There is now a finger post. 200 metres before you
meet this junction the path becomes a stream. To the left, as you walk, a track is visible between the wire
13
fence and the trees. This is a short cut but is not a right of way. It emerges onto the BOAT, but there are no
way marks, purposely, to guide you on your way.
FACILITIES ALONG THE DALES WAY
Mobile phone reception is very poor or non-existent on many parts of the route.
There are only a few places where there are ATMs (see below). Cash is available at post offices
during opening hours to holders of some bank cards. Walkers are strongly recommended to come
provided with adequate cash and a cheque book with a bank guarantee card.
“All facilities” means public telephone, post office, a range of shops, cafés and toilets. Do not rely on

The Ramblers’ Association
What do we do?

We work non-stop to protect footpaths.

We campaign for more freedom of access to mountain, moorland, woodland and other open country.

We defend the beauty and diversity of Britain’s countryside.
Sixty years of successful lobbying at local and national level have been entirely dependent on membership subscriptions,
donations and legacies. We are a registered charity with over 125,000 members working hard to promote the health and
educational benefits of walking in the countryside.
The West Riding Area is one of the 53 Areas of the Ramblers’ Association which cover England, Wales and Scotland. It
includes the whole of West Yorkshire and parts of North Yorkshire around Selby, York, Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton and Settle, as
well as the southern part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Area has more than 4.000 members and is divided into 13
Local Groups.
What can you do? If you use and enjoy the footpath network, please remember what the Ramblers’ Association has done to
make this possible and help us to protect it, by becoming a member now. Further information can be found on our website:

DALES WAY ASSOCIATION
For those who care for the Dales Way...
The Dales Way Association is a voluntary organisation which was formed in 1991 with the
support of the Ramblers' Association and the South Lakeland Tourist Association. Its
purpose is to ensure that the Dales Way Long Distance Footpath and appropriate link
paths are properly maintained and waymarked, and that the corridor of countryside through
which it passes is conserved and safeguarded. The Association will examine opportunities
for improving the route either by means of footpath creations or diversions. It will support
the provision of accommodation, refreshment, transport and related facilities for walkers in
ways which support the local economy without destroying its character. It may also
advocate National Trail status for the route. An official Dales Way badge and logo, together
with special waymarks for the route, have been produced.
Membership is open to all who have walked or plan to walk the Dales Way or simply care
about its future. Members receive a free copy of this Dales Way Handbook each year and
two Newsletters.
Membership is only £6 per annum, and membership applications (cheques payable to the
Dales Way Association) should be addressed to the Membership Secretary, the Dales Way
Association, PO Box 1065, Bradford, BD1 9JY. (email: info@dalesway.org.uk)
The Association’s website is www.dalesway.org.uk
DALES WAY CERTIFICATES AND BADGES
Dales Way certificates are available to all who have walked the whole or part of the Dales
Way. If you would like a certificate, please send the names you would like included on it,
plus the direction of your walk and the month and year you completed it, along with a
cheque for £1.50 per certificate, payable to the Dales Way Association, to the address
above. The Association is always interested to hear an account of your walk, with
comments on any matters of interest, including the accommodation you used and any
difficulties you encountered.
Woven badges are available at £1.50 each and the Association now stocks the
Gemmell/Speakman Route Guide (see page 2). This can be supplied, post free, at the
cover price of £5.99 each. Obtainable from the Association – see address above. Cheques
for Dales Way Association.
