Coconino High School
Girl’s Basketball 2010-2011
Academic and Behavior Contract
Kenneth Bennett- Head Varsity Coach
Ricky Baca- Head JV Coach
Sharon Washington- Head Freshman Coach
Cary Mortensen- Varsity Asst. Coach
As a staff, it is our belief that in this day and age it is of great importance that we teach and
instill in our young women the concepts of responsibility and accountability. With that in mind, our
staff will institute this academic and behavior contract. The rules and guidelines set in this contract
will be strictly enforced. We hope that every one of our student-athletes will abide by the rules set
forth in this contract. Yet, it must be understood that these rules, if broken, come with
consequences. There will be ZERO tolerance for broken rules and individuals will receive the
consequences set in this contract, which has been agreed upon by the coaching staff and reviewed
and approved by the administration of Coconino High School.
SCHOOL BEHAVIOR
Attendance:
Players are required to attend every class. Players who miss school on game days for unverified or
unexcused reasons will not be allowed to play. A weekly attendance check will be held every Monday
prior to practice. There will be a penalty for all tardiness and unexcused absences/truancies. They
will go as follows:
Unexcused Absence: 1 mile run & suspension from next game
1st-3rd Late: 1-3 = 1 mile run
4th Late = 1 Absence, which would garner above penalty
Homework:
All Assignments must be turned in prior to leaving school for away games.
Tutoring:
TUTORING IS AVAILABLE! You have a responsibility to yourself and your teammates to remain
eligible.
Character:
YOU WILL respect teachers, staff, administration, and your fellow students.
Participation Eligibility:
We sincerely want Student-Athletes. Therefore, our program will abide by the district policy with
the following additions marked with an “*”:
During the season, grade checks will be conducted every three weeks. The following actions will take
place with students receiving a failing (F) grade.
 1st offenses: students will be removed from basketball games for the next
three weeks or until the failing grade is raised to a 60% or above.
 2nd + offenses: Students will be automatically removed from basketball games
for the next three weeks. Students will not be given the chance to play
during these three weeks, even if the grade has been raised.
*** Student Progress reports during the season receiving a D or below have mandatory tutoring
before school, during lunch, or after school (possibly missing practice) until the grade is brought
back up to a “C.” Student’s tutors will verify with signature for the coach to approve and document.
*** Also, in contrast to the belief that once the semester ends the players get a clean slate, our
staff has agreed to give one-week suspensions to any player who receives a grade of F on the final
grade report of the semester.
TEAM BEHAVIOR
Practice:
Players Are Expected To Make All Practices. Practice times are as follows:
All levels will practice from 2:45PM to 5:00PM the first two weeks, then switch to 5:00PM to
7:15PM for one week. This pattern will continue throughout the season unless notified.
* Practice times are subject to change
Holiday Practices are mandatory; see calendar for dates. Times are TBA.
Training Staff:
Our training staff headed by Head Trainer Eric Freas is exceptional. In an effort to save you money,
should you have an injury, we ask that you go see Mr. Freas first before going to see a doctor. He
will direct you to a physician if further treatment is needed. If you need treatment of any sort or if
you need to be taped, the training room is open immediately after school. Use this to your advantage
and be sure to treat the training staff with respect.
Tardiness
Again, you are expected to make ALL practices AND be on time. On time does not mean that you
show up right when a practice or game starts. You should always attempt to arrive at least 15
minutes before the start of practice and an hour before the start of a game.
1st Tardy offense- extra running after practice determined by coach
2nd Tardy offense- extra running and a written statement to coaches and players giving an
explanation and plan of action.
3rd offense- above & possible game suspension
4th offense- grounds for dismissal from team
We understand that there may be situations outside of basketball that may take precedence over
being at practice. These EXCUSED situations include verified School-Related, Family and/or Medical
reasons. All that we ask is for you to communicate with us what is going on. This keeps players,
coaches, and family on the same page. With that being said, a lack of communication WILL NOT BE
TOLERATED!!!
Sportsmanship:
We are very aware of the competitive nature of high school sports. We here at CHS will be taught
to compete at a high, intense, and championship level WIN or LOSE! This DOES NOT mean that we
will, at any time, act in any way that either shows disrespect to another player or high school or
embarrasses the institution of Coconino High School. Acting in such a manner will result in either
game suspensions or dismissal from team. These statements apply to student’s parents as well.


FIGHTING or GOING INTO THE STANDS during a fight WILL result in an Automatic
Suspension and possible dismissal from team!
HAZING OR ANY INITIATION BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and will result in
immediate dismissal from the program!
Road Trip Behavior
 All students will be required to wear clothing that meets the CHS Dress Code Policy. The Varsity
Coach will “okay” your clothing before you step on the bus for a road trip. If your clothing does
not follow the dress code of our school, you WILL NOT be allowed to go on the trip. We will be
known as a program that represents classy behavior and appearance, nothing less will be
tolerated!
 Listening to I-pods or CD players will not be allowed once we step off the bus. Cell phones will be
collected prior to road trips and returned after the final game is over. We are building a strong
reputation as an elite program that shows great respect for our opponents, and our behavior on

the road will continue to reflect as such. In the event a parent needs to contact their child, the
coaching staff will have their cell phones on at all times and can be reached.
All students will be required to support the CHS teams, do homework, or help with scorebook and
stats or filming during the games.
Game & Practice Gear:
Players will be issued hoop apparel including a game uniform set and a reversible practice jersey and
shorts. There will be a fee of $25 dollars per practice item lost and $50 per game item lost or not
returned at seasons end. They are your responsibility, DO NOT LOSE THEM!!!
Drug & Alcohol Abuse:
There is no room for athletes who wish to compete at this high level of competition to be involved in
the use of drugs and alcohol. It WILL NOT be tolerated in our program under ANY circumstances.
We will follow the district policy on this to the utmost degree!
Open Door/Family Policy:
We as a staff ask that in the event that any player or parent becomes unhappy or disappointed for
whatever reason at any point during the season, such issues will be brought to the attention of the
coaches FIRST! We all want the very best for each and every one of our players, so if there’s a
problem that needs to be discussed or resolved, let’s do so within the Family that is Coconino
Basketball. Thank You
I, ______________________, agree to expectations, rules, and consequences set forth in the
above contract. I understand that should I break any rule that I will be subject to the given
punishment. This contract goes into effect, ___________(date) and will be in effect until season’s
end.

*Booster Club Side note for Parents

players. So we ask that you help in any way you can, whether it be helping with selling splitthe-pot tickets at home games, or fundraising efforts outside of school. Thank You!
CHS GIRLS BASKETBALL PROGRAM
CHS GIRL’S BASKETBALL Practice Rules
1. All student-athletes will hustle (run) during the entire practice. This includes in-between drills,
getting a drink, or using the restroom. The “reminder” will be 5 push-ups, 5 crunches, 5 sky jumps, 5
knee to chest jumps, 5 star jumps, etc…
2. All student-athletes will show good character throughout practice. This includes attitude,
encouragement, work ethic, teamwork, sportsmanship, competitiveness, etc. The reminder to show
good character can be given by a coach. The “reminder” will be 5 push-ups, 5 crunches, 5 sky jumps,
5 knee to chest jumps, 5 star jumps, etc…
3. All student-athletes will go see the trainer if they have been injured. The trainer will make the
decision on whether or not the student-athlete will continue to practice and to what degree. The
coaches will honor the trainer’s decision. All student-athletes will remain in practice if they are not
allowed to participate, unless otherwise notified.
4. All student-athletes must bring and wear their practice jersey and black shorts at every
practice. The reminder for not doing so is one “17” at the end of practice.
5. All student-athletes must bring their CHS Team Playbook Binder to every practice and games.
The reminder for not doing so is one “17” at the end of practice, or if it was a game day, the “17”
will be ran after the next practice. If the binder is found where other NON-CHS Girl’s
Basketball Student-Athletes can get to it, there will be major consequences. No one shall see
inside your binder, but YOU!!! Lots of “reminders” will follow the breaking of this rule. Your
teammates will also be a part of your “reminder.”
CHS GIRL’S BASKETBALL Playing Time
Playing time is a sensitive subject on any high level team. I want you to be clear about my
expectations and how I make my decisions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
You have to develop a strong skill base as measured by our statistical evaluation system.
You must display a commitment to team guidelines.
You must display a competitive attitude during practice and in competition.
You must display a commitment to strength training, conditioning, nutrition, and solid sleep and
rest habits.
5. You will also be evaluated according to several “intangibles,” such as you ability to inspire others,
your ability to play well during critical moments in a match, you ability to be a “player”, and so
forth.
Clarifications
1. If you are not on the court during a match, you might decide that you have read my mind and know
my reasons for playing-time decisions without hearing them from me. Do not assume that you know.
Many factors maybe operating, such as limited substitution patterns, preferred match-ups, or the
quality of your practice performance leading up to the match. If you want clarification regarding
your playing-time status, select a time apart from practice or competition and talk to me about my
decisions.
2. I will attempt, whenever possible, to provide playing time for every athlete on the roster.
However, these opportunities cannot be guaranteed. And when they do or do not occur, my
perception of when they should occur may not coincide with your perception.
3. Understand that above all, playing-time decisions are motivated by my obligation to produce a
team that will defeat our opponent. I will always put the players on the floor who I think have the
best chance to win.
4. It is likely that at some point you will disagree with my decisions. This is to be expected at this
level of competition. Your job is to control your emotions and contribute to team chemistry.
All student-athletes must have FUN!!!! Work Hard!!!!
ENJOY Your Basketball Family!!!!
