Insect Pathology Services
Purpose:
Identification of disease organisms and microbes responsible for contaminating
insect colonies and/or their artificial rearing diets.
Basic service:
Initial population screen of up to 20 insects (= 1 population) for infectious disease
organisms [bacteria, fungi, protozoa, occluded viruses, and nematodes]. This
includes a stained smear from each insect as well as streaking on microbiological
agar plates. ($75 per population).
Additional services:*
1. Antibiotic sensitivity assay (12-15 antibiotics used) for bacteria encountered from
initial screen ($35 per assay).
2. Identification of bacterium (to genus) isolated from initial screen ($75 per
bacterium).
3. Non-occluded virus screen by TEM (will include representative photos from
sample) ($110 per sample).
Routine screen:
We can also offer periodic population screens of up to 20 insects per sample date and
population for early detection and prevention of insectary diseases (frequency and
cost to be negotiated).
Results emailed as tests are completed. Full written report and invoice mailed
within 2 to 3 weeks.

Ship insects priority overnight and packaged in a way to protect from extreme
environmental conditions. Also do no ship insects without prior notification. Since
some assays take 48 hours to complete please ship for Tues.-Thurs. arrival.
*Done after seeing results (or lack there of) from basic screen and after
communication with investigator

A much needed pathology service for assisting members of the rearing
community in their efforts to minimize diseases caused by microbes
within their colonies and to manage microbes that contaminate their
diets. This service offers not only diagnosis of problems but also
suggestions for their solution
