In mapping K-5 literature to the common core standard strands, we have begun by identifying what
literary qualities or responses to literature are emphasized in each standard. This is the starting point for
mapping individual trade books to the standards.
Literature and Informational Text Standards
Key Ideas and Details
Books that can be used to encourage:
1. Questioning (Ask and answer questions about text)
2. Retelling/summarizing/Identifying main idea(s) and key details
3. Describing character development, setting/Identifying major events/ideas and relationships
between / among them
Craft and Structure
