Specialist Registrar/Specialist Trainee SPHS09/466 Job Description Unit Name: SPHSU Division/Section: Job Title: Specialist Registrar/Specialist Trainee Salary range: Band: Reports to: Professor Lyndal Bond Tenure: Evaluations Programme The registrar/trainee would be appointed on the appropriate NHS Specialist Registrar/Trainee Scale. 2 years Working Hours: 36/week Clinical Training: The MRC SPHSU is offering a 2 year appointment in this Faculty-approved training location. The postholder will be seconded to this unit while remaining an employee of their present NHS authority. The trainee would also be attached to a Health Board. Greater Glasgow Health Board has agreed to offer this attachment if required and to add the post-holder to the on-call rota. The Health Board attachment will give the trainee the necessary service contract to permit appropriate development and implementation of research. The attachment would also ensure access to relevant health service information systems. The precise nature, length and timing of the attachment would be discussed with the Postgraduate Dean. Honorary contracts at Specialist Registrar level will be applied for from the relevant Health Boards. Training Review: This is a 24 month attachment in a recognised specialist registrar slot outwith the “base” service Health Board Department of Public Health. The time in SPHSU would be counted as Research/Academic experience. The incumbent will retain his/her own National Training Number (NTN) if already possessed. There would be an annual review with the Postgraduate Dean and the West of Scotland Committee to review progress. Overall Purpose: To contribute to developments in the evaluation of the health impacts of social interventions. Key Responsibilities: The trainee would be expected to: 1. Work with the Evaluating the Effects on Health of Social Interventions programme. 2. Carry out a systematic review which would examine the effectiveness of a non-healthcare sector intervention (such as a group of related polices, programme or projects) in influencing population health or inequalities (for example, in the field of transport, housing, employment or other relevant field). 3. Contribute to the programme of work in the Evaluating the Effects on Health of Social Interventions programme, which will involve setting up and carrying out an outcome evaluation of a social intervention (for example, in the area of housing and regeneration, transport, welfare to work or other relevant area). 4. Present research findings at conferences and write them up for publication in high quality journals. 5. Provide a medical and epidemiological input to the work of SPHSU. This would involve acting as clinical or public health advisor to health and social surveys, or referring colleagues to appropriate clinical and epidemiological expertise elsewhere. Liaise between relevant programmes of research in MRC SPHSU, NHS Health Scotland, the Section of Public Health and Health Policy at the University of Glasgow, and with Health Boards, and other MRC Units where appropriate, and with non-academic users of our research. It has its own specialist library and runs a research skills course for staff and it’s PhD students. The experience would promote the acquisition of basic and advanced research skills including critical appraisal, publication in peer reviewed journals, plus dissemination skills. We would expect the research undertaken by the post holder to be developed for submission as an MD or PhD thesis. The Specialist Registrar/Specialist Trainee would be encouraged to participate in courses which would enhance their core transferable skills. The Specialist Registrar/Specialist Trainee would have open access to all Unit and departmental activities including seminars, tutorials, and research-in-progress meetings, opportunities for up to 5 hours per week teaching at the University’s Section of Public Health and Health Policy at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to other resources which include not only the large and well stocked University library but also good computer hardware, software IT support and online access to OVID, JANET, MEDLINE and BIDS. They would also have access to all University staff training and development courses, including in teaching. This is a valuable opportunity to work in a Unit with an international reputation for its research on the wider determinants of health. We aim to appoint an individual with prior Special Registrar or Specialist Trainee PH experience, who would therefore have obtained a Masters degree in Public Health or MSc and obtained Part A MFPH and a further one year of training in a Health Board, Health authority or equivalent unit.
