Job Description
Additional Information:
The MRC SPHSU employs staff from a range of non-clinical disciplines including
medical sociology, health psychology, anthropology, epidemiology, statistics and
human sciences. It has its own specialist library and runs a research skills course
for staff and it’s PhD students.
The experience would promote the acquisition of basic and advanced research
skills including critical appraisal, publication in peer reviewed journals, plus
dissemination skills. We would expect the research undertaken by the post holder
to be developed for submission as an MD or PhD thesis. The Specialist
Registrar/Specialist Trainee would be encouraged to participate in courses which
would enhance their core transferable skills.
The Specialist Registrar/Specialist Trainee would have open access to all Unit and
departmental activities including seminars, tutorials, and research-in-progress
meetings, opportunities for up to 5 hours per week teaching at the University’s
Section of Public Health and Health Policy at undergraduate and postgraduate
level, and to other resources which include not only the large and well stocked
University library but also good computer hardware, software IT support and online access to OVID, JANET, MEDLINE and BIDS. They would also have access to
all University staff training and development courses, including in teaching.
This is a valuable opportunity to work in a Unit with an international reputation
for its research on the wider determinants of health. Further details on the Unit’s
research programmes, and on our programme of evaluations and systematic
reviews can be found in the Unit’s Annual 2008 Report
(http://www.sphsu.mrc.ac.uk/annual_reports.php).
We aim to appoint an individual with prior Special Registrar or Specialist Trainee
PH experience, who would therefore have obtained a Masters degree in Public
Health or MSc and obtained Part A MFPH and a further one year of training in a
Health Board, Health authority or equivalent unit.
If applicants are currently training outside Scotland applicants should clarify with
their home Deanery that they will bring their training number with them and will
return to their home Deanery on completion of the appointment.

The MRC values the diverse skills and experience of its employees and is
committed to achieving equality of treatment for all. Its objective is that all
individuals shall have equal opportunities for employment and advancement on
