ACTION PLAN
Numeracy
2012 – 2013
Cranston High School West
School Improvement Plan
Target: To improve the mathematical performance of
students who have not met the NECAP proficiency
standard .
Changes in student
behavior:
What will students do to reach the
identified result?
Result Statement: Students who performed below the standard or showed little evidence of improvement in
math will show measurable improvement in problem solving, skills, and concepts on the NECAP assessment.
Changing Instruction:
What will teachers do to ensure students reach the
intended results?
Monitoring
progress with
timelines and
adjustments:
How will teachers measure
progress and make
adjustments towards the
changes in learning behavior
and teaching that we want?
How often will this occur?
How will teachers inform and
involve the school
administration, parents and
SIT?
 Explore, connect and extend
their problem solving
knowledge, skills and concepts
 Demonstrate proficiency in
number and operation concepts
 Demonstrate proficiency in
geometry and measurement

 Demonstrate proficiency in
function and algebra concepts
 Demonstrate proficiency in
statistics and probability
concepts
 Practice a variety of problem
solving methods and strategies
in order to determine most
efficient method
 Practice NECAP released test
items and NECAP style
questions in all math classes
 Practice teacher- made
NECAP- like test items in all
math classes
 Implement the College Board Springboard
Algebra 1 curriculum with ninth graders
 Ensure that ninth graders will be enrolled in
Algebra 1 or Geometry
Schedule a second math class for students
significantly below proficient
Continue to focus Math Workshop classes on
the GSE’s and practicing NECAP style
questions
 Provide additional instruction time in a
small group setting based on individual
student needs.
 Ensure that selected students will receive
double time in Algebra 1
 Continue to ensure that all tenth graders will
have completed a year of Geometry before
taking the math NECAPs in 11th grade
 Implement Springboard Geometry to ensure
that Geometry classes will be student centered
and hands on
 Ensure that all tenth grade students spend
adequate time reviewing NECAP problems
 Use NWEA data
analysis to identify
skill areas that need
to be reinforced
 Progress should be
monitored by Special
Education staff where
appropriate.
 Communicate
progress with parents
through interims, report
cards, guidance
counselor, or directly
with parent.
 Use varied
assessments to measure
student learning
Use results of NWEA
math assessments for
grades 9, 10 and 11 to
monitor student
progress
Action Plan Update: April 2012
Collaboration
and Support:
When will teachers find
time to collaborate and
discuss the information
they get from
monitoring to improve
teaching and learning?
 Communicate
and collaborate
with Special
Education teachers
where appropriate.
 Provide common
planning time at
least once a cycle
so that teachers can
communicate and
collaborate on the
student’s progress.
 Provide
additional support
through a math
peer tutor program
 Provide common
planning at the end
of the school day
twice a week on
non
faculty/department
Resources,
School and
District:
What school-wide and
district supports and
resources will be necessary
to achieve the results of the
action plan?
 Recommend that the
district review
elementary math
instruction time on
task for each grade
level expectation
 Recommend that the
district place more
students into PreAlgebra in grade 7
 Recommend that the
district build more
math instructional
time into the grade 7
and grade 8 schedule
to make up for time
lost through
interdisciplinary units
 Increase
communication with
Special Education
teachers.
Evaluating
Results/Repor
ting to
Families and
Community:
How will the school know
if the students reach the
intended results?
 Progress will be
evident in state
assessment results
 Results
of NECAP testing
will be shared with
school community
 Overall statistics
regarding the
collective
improvement of the
students will be
shared with
administration and

informational text
Cranston High School West
School Improvement Plan
 Ensure that all 11th grade students spend
adequate time in the early fall reviewing NEC
AP problems
Provide teachers with individual student
testing data from the NWEA data analysis in
a timely manner so that teachers can review
the data in order to personalize and focus
instruction based on the needs of the student.
Provide teachers with a NECAP math data
analysis in a timely manner so that teachers
can review the data in order to focus
instruction on the needs of the students
 Integrate technology when appropriate
 Use strategies to improve student recall of
basic math facts,
 Incorporate manipulative when appropriate
 Use applications of mathematics that model
real world situations
Provide opportunities for students to
challenge, justify, and share their solutions
both orally and in writing
 Use mathematical games as a motivational
tool that requires high level thinking in
mathematical concepts, ie: Mango, Equate
 Work collaboratively with special education
teachers for team teaching and inclusion
