Hardwood Specialty Products – Echo Wood MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet – Echo Wood Originally prepared in October 2007 Hardwoods Specialty Products 333 Changhong Street, Wukang Town, Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, P.R. China Tel: 0086-572-806-1397 Section I – Production Information Product Name: Engineered Wood (including Engineered Wood Block, Engineered Wood Sawn Lumber, Engineered Wood Sliced Veneer.) Chemical Family: Nil. HMIS Rating: Health= Sound, Fire=B2 grade, Reactivity=Nil; Effects to Health: During manufacturing, the product may release small quantities of formaldehyde in a gaseous form. The concentration tested is no more than 1.5mg/L for E1 Grade products and no more than 5.0mg/L for E2 Grade products using the desiccator method. The concentration will reach peak value in a confined area. Emissions decrease through time as the panels age. Manual or mechanical cutting or abrasion processes performed on the product can result in the generation of wood dust. 1. Wood Dust May cause nasal dryness, irritation and obstruction. Coughing, wheezing, sneezing and sinusitis and prolonged colds have also been reported. 2. Gaseous Formaldehyde May cause temporary irritation to eyes, nose and throat. Some reports suggest that formaldehyde may cause respiratory sensitization, such as asthma and that pre-existing respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure. Formaldehyde is listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a probable human carcinogen. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) includes formaldehyde in the Annual Report on Carcinogens. Formaldehyde is regulated by OSHA as a potential cancer agent. In studies involving rats, formaldehyde has been shown to cause nasal cancer after long-term exposure to very high concentrations (14+ ppm), far above those normally found in the workplace using this product. 1 Hardwood Specialty Products – Echo Wood MSDS The National Cancer Institute (NCI) conducted an epidemiological study of industrial workers exposed to formaldehyde (published June 1986). The NCI concluded that the data provides little evidence that mortality from cancer is associated with the formaldehyde exposure at the levels experienced by workers in the study. Section II – Ingredients Ingredients CAS# Maximum Content (% weight) Exposure Limits Wood Veneer Nil 90-92% Urea Formaldehyde Resin 9011-05-6 6-8% Polyvinyl Acetates Resin (PVA) 0-1% Glycol 0-0.5% Dyes 0-1% Pigments 0-0.3% Primary Hazard Warning The above-mentioned ingredients are combined with glue and pressure. The adhesives used during the manufacturing process are cured leaving only a little amount of formaldehyde in the product. Formaldehyde emissions decrease through time as the panels age. According to EU standards the free formaldehyde can be rated: E0, the emission of free formaldehyde is not more than 0.5mg/L E1, the emission of free formaldehyde is not more than 1.5mg/L E2, the emission of free formaldehyde is not more than 5.0mg/L Section III – Hazardous Identification Ingestion: Not likely to occur Eye Contact: Sawn dust and gaseous formaldehyde may cause temporary irritation or a burning sensation. Wood dust can cause mechanical irritation Skin Contact: Both formaldehyde and various species of wood dust may evoke allergic contact dermatitis in sensitized individuals. Inhalation: Sawn dust, vapor and gas may irritate the throat and lung and cause trachea or chest disease and asthma. 2 Hardwood Specialty Products – Echo Wood MSDS Section IV – First Aid Measure/Health Hazard Data Eyes: Flush with large amounts of fresh water. If irritation persists, get medical attention. Skin: Wash with mild soap and fresh water. irritation or dermatitis occurs. Get medical advice if rash, persistent Ingestion: Not applicable Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Get medical advice if persistent irritation, severe coughing or breathing difficulty occurs. Teratology: Nil Reproduction: Nil Section V – Accidental Release Measures Accidental Release Measures: Nil Steps to be taken in case material is released or spilled: Nil. Section VI – Fire Fighting Measures Flammability Class: B2 Grade. Flash Point: Nil. LEL: Nil. Auto Ignition Temperature: Unable to self-ignite. Extinguishing Media: Water, sand, spray Firefighting Procedures and Instructions: Nil. Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Nil. Section VII – Precautions for Safe Handling and Use Precautions to be taken in handling and storing: Good ventilation, avoid high moisture and humidity, keep away from direct sunlight and keep away from fire. Use care when handling the veneers to ensure that they do not split or crack. Other precautions: Nil. 3 Hardwood Specialty Products – Echo Wood MSDS Section VIII – Control Measures and Personal Protection Engineering Controls: Equipment shall be installed to take away dust. Respiratory protection: Wear masks. Skin protection: Wear uniform. Eye protection: Wear eye protection when cutting or generating dust Ventilation: Avoid dusty conditions. Good ventilation is needed. Section IX – Physical and Chemical Properties Boiling Point: Nil. Vapor Density: Nil. Melting Point: Nil. Evap Rate: Unable to evaporate. Vapor Pressure: Nil. Volatile: Nil. Vapor Density: Nil. Solubility in water: Nil. Specific Gravity: 0.55-0.80g/cm3 PH: 6-8. Odor: Because of the presence of resin, free formaldehyde emission may occur from the surface of the newly manufactured Engineered wood and newly cut Engineered wood. Appearance: Two types, Engineered wood lumber and Engineered wood veneer. The thickness of Engineered wood lumber ranges from 5-900mm and that of Engineered wood veneer is 0.12-4.0mm, which is made by pressing wood veneer with glues and resins. Section X – Stability and Reactivity Chemical Stability (conditions to avoid): Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and moisture/humidity. Incompatibility: Nil.
