IDEALS - International Development Through Excellence and Leadership in Sport
is a short term volunteer placement programme, which aims to establish a high
quality, progressive and co-ordinated sports leadership development exchange
programme for students and sport development professionals aged under35
years between the UK and partner countries. The programme is designed to be a
reciprocal exchange of ideas, culture and learning.
The IDEALS Zambia Basketball project aims to support the Zambia Basketball
Association (ZBA) to raise the profile and development of basketball in Zambia.
This will be achieved by developing a supportive network of partners (ZBA, the
Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC), the Wallace group (a university
consortium from Durham, Stirling, Northumbria, UWIC, Bath, Loughborough and
St Andrew’s), Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) and UK
Sport to support ZBA in their sport development.
Outcomes:
 Increased participation in basketball activities by supporting the development
of ZBA’s systems and structures, aligned to their 2010-2014 Development
Plan, Norwegian Olympic, Paralympic Committees and Confederation of Sports
(NIF), FIBA and Zone VI Sport Accreditation and Education Systems (SEAS)
 Developed partnership model to create a network of knowledge and resources
which can be used elsewhere or for different federations
 Developed a partnership model to create a network of knowledge sharing
amongst Executive committee and sub groups
 Developed working practices with OYDC, Sport in Action and other programme
partners
 Increased number of Basketball workforce for community and elite
programmes
 Increased number of female workforce for community and elite basketball

Practical Information:
The IDEALS Zambia Project is open to basketball professionals for short term
placements (for between 3 to 6 weeks). Flights, accommodation and stipend to
cover costs are provided. A UK induction will provide you with pre-flight briefing
information regarding all aspects of practical information

Job description
Role and Responsibilities:
The appointed will work with the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA), the
Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC), Sport in Action and other sport
development organisations to support the development of basketball in Zambia.
Based out of OYDC and working alongside the OYDC Basketball Coordinator to
support ZBA and their programmes.
Core activities:
1. Assist with the planning (and delivery where necessary) of the basketball
coach training, this process should be led by the ZBA coaches/ OYDC coached
and supported by the Basketball volunteer
2. Assisting the administration of courses, clinics, and leagues run by ZBA and at
OYDC and other venues.
3. Assist the Basketball Officer in the running of the OYDC junior league
4. Assist the Basketball Officer in the running of all Basketball leagues
5. Promote the link and communication between OYDC, ZBA and communitybased organisations SIA and EduSport. Liaising with both NGO’s, Sport in
Action and EduSport on the projects being run at OYDC.
6. Work with and mentor community basketball champions. Taking coaching
sessions in the IDEALS placements, once a week or fortnightly; going into the
communities to coach Basketball with different age groups.
7. Work with ZBA to implement a coaching and officiating strategy in the
education systems
8. Develop/ modify resources for ZBA to support their work; attend ZBA league
fixtures in the Lusaka province; visit different clubs affiliated to NAZ
9. Share views and experiences of UK life with the peers and other volunteers
and increasing self-awareness of Zambian culture during the placement
10. Work with ZBA and partners to develop community basketball strategic plan
encompassing coaches, officials and administrators.
11. Develop role descriptions with ZBA to strengthen its organisational structure
as a national federation
