New Japanese HSC Beginners - resources

The Beginners site has been updated in line with the new BOS Stage 6 Japanese
Beginners syllabus. The site contains many practice tasks including listening with audio,
sample questions for the speaking exam, reading and responding passages and sample
writing tasks.
Nihongo no Benkyoo
While this material is no longer available to order, schools that already have it can use it
as a supplementary resource. Teachers need to keep in mind that this material was
written for the old syllabus. Therefore the content and the question styles may differ
from the current syllabus.
Japanese Resources 2 Unit Z Units 1-7 Board of Studies
These resources were developed by teachers of Japanese for the old 2 Unit Z syllabus.
They are an excellent resource for the new Japanese Beginners syllabus. They cover the
seven themes from the old syllabus, many of which are similar to the six topics in the
current syllabus and include an audio cassette for listening items and flashcards. The
package is available from the Board of Studies for $110 plus $4.00 postage (for 1 item).

A First Course in Japanese: Beginners course/accelerated level
Fudeko Reekie – Pascal Press
This course has been updated in line with the new syllabus and consists of a textbook,
workbook and two audio CDs. The course is organised around the six prescribed
syllabus topics. Each topic is divided into smaller units of work, each with topic-related
vocabulary, kanji and grammar explanations. The course is available through your
language bookshop.
Excel Beginners: Fudeko Reekie – Pascal Press
This book is aimed at students in Years 11 and 12 studying the Stage 6 Japanese
Beginners course. It includes a study guide, script pages, grammar points and practice
questions in reading and responding, listening and responding, speaking and writing. It
can be used as a supplementary resource for practice leading up to exams.

NEW!!! Stage 6 Speaking: Motto hanashitai!
Centre for Learning Innovations (CLI)
Motto hanashitai! is a series of learning objects to assist students to develop their
speaking skills in Japanese. The interactive activities, based on the six topics of the
Stage 6 Japanese Beginners syllabus, can be completed in any order. The final section
provides students with advice about preparing for the HSC speaking examination. Each
topic has a section for teachers with links to the syllabus outcomes, Quality Teaching
and intercultural language learning. Government school teachers can click on the image
to view and download the resource free from TaLe. Non-government school teachers
can purchase the resource from the Centre for Learning Innovation website.
NEW!!! Stage 6 Listening: Moshi moshi kite

Moshi moshi kiite is a series of learning objects to assist students to develop their
listening skills in Japanese. The interactive activities, based on the Stage 6 Japanese
Beginners syllabus are arranged in two parts, for preliminary and HSC students. Each
part has a section for teachers with links to the syllabus outcomes, Quality Teaching and
additional resources. The learning objects can also be used with students studying the
Continuers course. Government school teachers can download this resource free from
TaLe. Non-government school teachers can purchase this resource from the Centre for
Learning Innovation website.

Video/DVD: Japanese for Junior Secondary Students
This video/DVD resource, consisting of 14 video segments and an accompanying 230
page booklet, was developed by the Curriculum K-12 Directorate of the NSW DET to
support Japanese programs in junior secondary classes. Many of the topics covered in
the video are related to the new Stage 6 Beginners syllabus and the language level is
accessible for Stage 6 Beginners students. Government schools can order a free copy
through the Japanese Consultants telephone 9886.7609. The DVD is also now available
for $20 plus GST, email sally.shimada@det.nsw.edu.au
Non government schools can purchase the resource through Television Oceania for

Sugoi! CD-ROM
This CD-ROM was developed by the Curriculum K-12 Directorate of the NSW DET to
support the NSW K-6 syllabus but would also be suitable for junior secondary students
and Year 11 Stage 6 Beginners students. Sugoi! is available free to government primary
schools and for $20 to government secondary schools through the Japanese consultants,
fax 9886.7160. Non government schools can purchase Sugoi! through the Curriculum
