ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS CATS AND DOGS
For animals, try to keep them off the bed, out of the bedroom
and preferably out of the house. The allergenic parts include
the saliva, urine and skin that dries onto the cat or dog’s fur, so
it is desirable for the animal to be washed weekly/monthly, it is
possible. However, there is a non-toxic product called Allerpet
that can be rubbed into the animal’s fur weekly and is especially
useful for people with cats that can’t be bathed.
In terms of what cats are more or less allergic, there is a
suggestion that ones with black fur are more allergic. They
have recently bred genetically divergent hypoallergenic cats.
The company Allerca currently breeds these cats and charges
$6,950 and up to acquire one.
With dogs, the larger ones that shed a lot like Labradors tend to
be more allergic.
The least allergic dogs include:
Havanese, a mid-sized kid friendly minimally allergic dog.
Portuguese Water Dogs, big, active dogs that look like
standard Poodles.
Brussels Griffons, a cute, mildly nervous, smart dog, featured in
the movie As Good as it Gets.
Less allergic dogs include:
Poodles, miniature more so than standard
Poodle mixes such as Labradoodles or Goldendoodles
Tzi Shus
Wheaton Terriers
Many people develop a level of tolerance for their own pet but
will react to other people’s pets or have problems if more
animals are added to the household.
