This Farming Life.
Reviewed by Ian Cartlidge
A full house at the village hall was treated to an evening of live music and film
on the 24th March as Tom and Barbara Brown brought their unique show to
Ashby Magna.
The synchronising of archive film with words and music was a wonderful way
to evoke memories of times gone by.
Touring as part of Centre Stage, Leicestershire and Rutland’s Rural and
Community Touring Scheme and drawing on the resources of the South West
Film and TV Archive, This Farming Life presented a wide ranging show of
traditional and modern folk song, prose and archive film.
The result was a fine evening of entertainment enjoyed by all as film depicting
farming scenes were mixed with music to provide poignant and sometimes
humorous views of farming life from the early 1900’s to the 1970’s. My
favourite film was about the cider makers who gathered in “Will’s Surgery” by
night to sample (in vast quantity) the end product. The dangers of doing so
were brought home by the story of the man who went home one night and got
into bed with his pig by mistake. Further testament to the volatility of the cider
was provided when, thinking he was in bed with his wife, he exclaimed that he
never realised she had so many buttons on her nightie!
