Methods:
Essay Question and Course Evaluation Form
LAE Category: Understanding Religion and Ethics 1. Religious Understanding
Goal Four: Muskingum students will demonstrate knowledge of physical wellness and of ethical and
spiritual concepts.
Learning Objective 2: Objective Students will demonstrate an ability to assess ethical and moral issues in
society critically.
Student Work Examined:
In this course students will answer an essay question on the final which will address the issue of
how Christianity relates to the social contexts in which it exists. That essay question reads: “The
relationship of Christianity to the ruling powers has been an important part of our study this term.
Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the church’s relationship to the government in
China and in Latin America. Describe at least one event in each case that illustrates that
relationship.”
A second stream of evidence that will be used is the LAE Goal Assessment Evaluation Form
given to students during the final week of class. This form includes questions asking the students
to evaluate how well the course addressed the goals of the LAE. Using both a self-reported
measure and a measure assessed by the faculty member ensures that multiple streams of data are
being used to develop a sense of how well the course is meeting the goals of the LAE.
Scoring Criteria:
Assessment will be based on how well the students can portray the ethical issues involved in the
state-religion relationship and articulate their own stance on the question. Below is the rubric for
that evaluation.
