Connection is for children who need emotional support. It enables
them to develop their full potential and acquire the skills and social
knowledge needed to lead fulfilled lives as adults. Groups run
weekly and there is a very high rate of volunteers to children, which
allows the volunteers to develop a friendship with each child and to
offer appropriate support where needed. Connection is a long-term
commitment to children and once a place has been given, children
can continue to attend for as along as they want, many choose to
stay for several years.

A puzzling condition in which children remain silent in unfamiliar
places, though with intimates they are able to communicate in an
age-appropriate manner. In time the children suffer educationally
and fail to develop social skills. This is very worrying for parents and
teachers – SMIRA enables parents to meet others with similar
problems. Informative handouts are available. Teachers, speech
and language therapists and psychologists have become actively
involved in parent meetings. Video (2004) and handbook available
