NLSD #113 Student CAREER DEVELOPMENT Newsletter
February, March 2014
Career Development
The models displayed above outline that Career Development is a process of self-awareness and of experiences
from which vision, interests and eventually goals are developed.
The career development process begins as soon as a student enters school. It starts with intentional support
being provided to students through academic studies (all curriculum areas including the Sask. Career Ed and
Practical and Applied Arts curriculum) and external experiences to explore environments and activities
associated with future occupational paths. Experiences of this nature support the development of an intrinsic
excitement and motivation about their future options. In addition when students are supported to become aware
of and be able to articulate their interests, abilities and strengths they also begin to determine what fits and what
does not. These activities are valuable and worth the time and effort they require. .

March 2014 Career Development events
Northern Winter Games for NLSD #113 middle years students
These events were hosted at Charlebois School, Cumberland House, SK and it was a first for the Skills
Canada/Sask. event of the Snow Shoe Building and Race. Nine teams of boys and girls entered the competition
with Minahik Waskihigan winning the event with the strongest snow shoes and the fastest racing time.

Skills Canada/ Sask. High School Events
This year NLSD will have a total of six students competing in the Skills Canada/Sask. Provincial Competitions.
The competitors will include two students in the Baking Competition (Churchill and Dene High), one in
Cooking Competition (Churchill), the Northern Regional gold winner student in Carpentry (Churchill), the
Northern Regional gold winner student in Welding (Churchill) and a student in Photography (Charlebois
School). This is wonderful!!!!
It is important to recognize Churchill Community School has supported student participation in these
competitions over the last two years and several years ago Charlebois Community School also supported a
student to participate (this student was in the Baking Competition and went on to compete in the Skills Canada
National Competitions). If there were any others I apologize.
Gratitude is extended to those who supported these students to practice and attend these exciting events both at
the Northern Regionals and those that will be competing in the Provincials.
NLSD is proud of those students who have put the extra effort and time to practicing and taking on the
challenge of competing in these very structured and rigorous competitions.
Northern Skills Canada/Sask. Competitions – March 5th, 2014

the two in baking were automatically entered into the Skills Canada/Sask. Provincial competitions.

Northern Health Career Forum
This year was the second annual Northern Health Career Forum for students who have expressed an interest in
Health Careers. Students from grades 9-12 were invited. Participants attending were from La Loche Dene High,
Twin Lakes, Valley View School, Minahik Waskihigan, Charlebois and Churchill High Schools. There were
several speakers including doctors, nurses, pharmacist, and interactive activity areas set up with occupational
therapy, casting, nutrition, and blood pressure and head injuries. In addition this year for the first time the
opportunity for students to job shadow and participate in some activities with the Prince Albert EMT Unit.
Science Teacher Rebecca Slater from La Loche Dene High explained the new Science courses to the students
and Health Professionals which include the newly piloted Health Science Course.
Planning for an even expanded Health Forum is in the works for next year.
MyRobot Rumble Provincial Competition, March 20th, SIAST, Saskatoon
NLSD had one team that entered this year but in previous years there have been two teams from different schools than this
year. There were 81 teams (of two students) from all around Sask. who first were divided into 8 competing groups –
NLSD ended in 6th place losing in a tie breaker bout that was very exciting.
This year’s NLSD had one team that entered which was comprised of Eric Burnoff (grade 9) and Bryce Sahyes (grade 10)
– students from Valley View School with their Science Teacher Stephen Hadden and robot “Hank”.
These are very serious events with strict regulations.
The winning teams then bout together in the finals and other teams competed in the consolation category. The NLSD
Valley View Team took fourth in this category.
Gratitude is extended to those teachers who support these students to build, program and practice with these
robots whether they come to the competition or not. And for those who bring their students all the way to
competing – there are lots of smiles. The only other northern team was from Ile-a-la-Crosse
NLSD is proud of those students who have put the extra effort and time to practicing and taking on the
challenge of competing in these very structured and rigorous provincial competitions.
