House of Usher
1. Create an origami house depicting the
. Use the instructions on the back of this sheet, and/or go to
Mrs. Caid’s website (mrscaid.weebly.com)  English 10  Videos.
2. Front: Decorate the front to include descriptive details of the house from Poe’s short story. Keep his dreary imagery
and symbolism in mind when adding the illustrations.
3. Inside: Create a scene on the inside of the house. Ideas include the entryway/staircase, the music room in which
Roderick spends much of his time, or the dungeon where they buried Madeline Usher. Use his descriptive detail as
the basis of your illustrations.
4. Back: Write a poem (10 lines minimum) about “The Fall of the House of Usher.” It can rhyme or be unrhymed. Keep
his dreary, gloomy imagery in mind when creating the poem. Remember that he owns his passages but not the
individual words. You may use as many of his “gloom and doom” descriptive words as you want within the context of
your own original writing. You can write your poem from the perspective of a character, from the perspective of an
outsider, as a summary of the poem, or whatever you choose!

House of Usher Instructions
Directions for the construction of the origami house. The first set of pictures was folding the blank paper. The second set of
pictures is an example of a finished product and what it looks like unfolded and then refolded.
1. Get a piece of 12 X 18 piece of white construction paper (see picture 1).
2. Fold it in half so that it is now 9 X 12 (see picture 2).
3. Turn the folded paper to where the opened edge is towards you (see picture 2).
4. Fold it in half again so that it is now 6 X 9. This step is to find the center. It looks a lot like a birthday card or Christmas card
at this point (see picture 3).
5. Open it back up (see picture 4).
6. Fold the right edge in so that it lines up with the “center line.” (In my picture, I wrote “Center Line,” but you would not really
do that.) (see picture 5).
7. Fold the left edge in so that it lines up with the “center line.” (see picture 6).
8. Take the right edge and open it up, then press down the triangle at the top that it creates. Press down the edges. (see
pictures 7, 8, and 9).
9. Repeat Steps 6 – 8 on the left side.
10. Now you have an origami house! Happy decorating!
