This leaflet is to provide you with information about the
hospital prior to admission or attendance. We hope you
will find it useful and that it answers any questions you
may have

Where is the hospital?
The hospital is situated at the South end of Kingussie High Street about half a mile
up Gynack Road, before the Golf Course.
There is minimal parking to the front and rear of the hospital; the front entrance is situated at
the front car park.
What happens if you need help with transport?
An ambulance or patients’ transport vehicle can be arranged if you need help for
medical reasons.
 Your GP can arrange transport for you
 A Social Car Scheme is in operation in certain parts of Badenoch & Strathspey if you
have no private transport and can’t manage public transport. Enquiries to Tel. No. 01479
812233 9.00am – 5.00pm Mon – Fri.
 The hospital has a mini-bus that may be available to those attending for day care.

Is there help with travel costs?
For information on entitlements for patients, please ask at the office,
St Vincent’s Hospital. Please keep all receipts from your travel costs.
What happens on admission to the hospital?
If you are being admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital, please report to the Nurse in
charge of the ward you are allocated to.
Personal Safety and Security
We will take every precaution possible to ensure personal safety and security of the
patients in our care.
What to bring on admission
 All medicines you are taking.
 Any disabled aids such as walking stick, zimmer frame.
 Day and night clothes (3 sets of each); shoes, slippers, dressing gown, toiletries.
 Any continence aids being used at home (pads).
 A small amount of money to pay for newspapers, sweets, etc.
Please do not bring valuables such as jewelry, bankbooks or credit cards, unless
absolutely necessary.
Care and treatment in hospital
On admission and throughout a stay at the hospital you or your relative’s care will be
reviewed by his/her named nurse and members of the core team. If they are unsure
of any aspects of the care provided please ask one of the nursing staff.
Confidentiality
All information about you or your relative’s condition is strictly confidential.
Information will not be passed to anyone else without consent. Information will only
be given to other relatives and friends with your permission
Visiting
Visiting is allowed at any time except meal times, unless you are helping with your
relative'’ care.
Meals
Breakfast 8.00 am onwards
Lunch 12.00 – 1.00 pm
Tea
5.00 – 6.00 pm
Each day there is a menu from which to choose from.
Enquiries
It is helpful if one member of the family acts as the main contact person to pass on
information, etc. Appointments can be arranged to speak to members of the multidisciplinary team.
What happens when it is time to go home?
Most people arrange their own transport to go home. If this is not possible an
ambulance may be able to be arranged, or use of the Social Car Scheme. A five-day
supply of medication will be given. Any help needed at home such as home care,
meals on wheels, or visits from other members of the staff, will be arranged before
you are discharged.
A letter will be sent to your GP, District Nurse and community psychiatric nurse if
necessary. This will give details of any treatment you received and any further care
required.
Facilities Available
WVS Trolley
The trolley visits the wards once a week and sells confectionery and toiletries.
Telephone
A telephone is available in each ward office
And there is a portable telephone on Gynack Ward.
Mail
Any post will be delivered to your ward. Post arriving after your discharge will be
forwarded to you.
Laundry
For anyone unable to make arrangements for their personal washing, the hospital
can provide laundering services. All items to be laundered need to be clearly marked
with your name and are sent to the laundry at your own risk. All woollens must be
laundered at home unless machine washable.

The NHS provides an information and advice line about illness, patients’ rights, selfhelp and support groups.
Dementia Helpline (Alzeimers Scotland)

For specific information about dementia services in Highland. All calls are free and
confidential. Nursing staff in the wards can provide you with most of the information
you will need.
Comments, Suggestions and Complaints
The Trust welcomes comments, suggestions or complaints about any aspect of your
or your relative’s stay in hospital. These can be made to the hospital staff, the
Hospital Manager, Mrs. J. Veasey, Alder House, Cradlehall Business Park,
Inverness IV2 5GH or by writing to the Chief Executive of the Trust – Dr Rodger
Gibbons, who is located at Assynt House, Beechwood Park, Inverness IV2 3HG.
We also offer a questionnaire for patients and relatives to complete on discharge. A
leaflet outlining the NHS complaint procedure is available in the wards.
Hospital Policies
Medical Records
You have a right to see your health records. The nurse in charge will be able to
advise you what to do.
Smoking and Alcohol
Alcohol is permitted for all residents if desired. .
No smoking Policy
From 8th March 2006 smoking will not be allowed anywhere in St Vincent’s Hospital.
This will allow St Vincent’s to fulfill its Health Improvement role, and to meet the
Government’s ban on smoking in public places. You will not be able to smoke
anywhere in St Vincent’s. This applies to all patients, visitors and staff. Regular
smokers often find that coming into hospital is a good reason to “give up” smoking.
Patients who smoke are coming into hospital will be assisted with no smoking while
in hospital.
If you are concerned about this change, and are due to come into hospital, please
discuss with your General Practitioner (GP). Alternatively you may want to talk to the
Smoking Cessation Service on Lo-call 0845 7573077, or Smokeline on 0800 848484
Fire Safety
In the event of the fire alarm ringing the nursing staff will advise you what to do.
Courtesy to Staff
Staff are required to be courteous to the public and courteous behaviour towards
staff is appreciated.
Mobile Phones
Please do not use mobile phones – they may cause interference to medical
equipment
